Eyes Wide Shut

Type: Drama

Rating: ***1/2 (out of five stars)

In "Eyes Wide Shut", Tom Cruise plays Dr. Bill Harford, who lives in New York City with his wife Alice and his young daughter. Anyway, after coming home from a fancy party hosted by an old colleague of Bill's, the two settle down in their bedroom. After smoking some pot, Alice confesses an insane lust she had for a naval officer that she saw when the two were on vacation the year before. Though she never even talked to the naval officer, the story causes Bill to become very jealous.

Later that night, Bill is called to visit the relatives of one of his patients who recently passed away. While there, the deceased patient's daughter confesses that she has had a crush on him. Bill does not think too much of this, but on the way home he is tempted into getting the services of a prostitute. Later, he finds an old friend of his, Nick Nightingale, who is playing the piano in a New York jazz club. Nick tells Bill of a masked orgy that he is supposed to play at late in the night. Though advised by Nick not to go, Bill decides to attend it anyway, and witnesses many bizarre events. Afterwords, some very odd things begin happening to Bill, and he must try to find an explanation.

"Eyes Wide Shut" has some good character development and uses its setting (New York City) well. However, I think it takes too long to develop the characters and story before getting to the interesting parts. I also found the ending to be somewhat of a disappointment. However, the middle part of the movie was so well done and suspenseful, in my opinion, that it makes up for the duller points.
