Rated: R

This movie contains a LOT of violence. Steven Spielberg, the film's director, said that he was not going to take his 13-year old son to see this movie... I wouldn't either.

Type: War Drama

***** (out of five stars)

In this movie, Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) is instructed to lead a platoon of soldiers behind enemy lines to retrieve Private James Ryan (Matt Damon). Ryan's 3 brothers all died in battle, and they are ordered to bring Private Ryan back home. Miller's trek behind enemy lines becomes very dangerous and is also intertwined with the soldiers' emotions and feelings as they become closer to each other. The movie starts off and ends with outstanding and tragic battle scenes, which are probably the most powerful parts of the movie (not to say that the other parts of the movie are bad).

I gave "Private Ryan" five stars because its very exciting, and they say its really realistic; it doesn't romanticize or glorify soldiers. Its definitely the best movie I've seen so far in 1998, and one of the best I've ever seen. Although its 3 hours long, most people don't seem to mind.
