Doug Crenshaw "Fort Harrison and The Battles for Chaffin's Farm" 7:30pm, Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church, Richmond, VA.,
4602 Cary Street Road, 23226. A parking lot is available behind the church with an entrance off the parking lot to the right and up a few steps into the DINING HALL on the left. Doug Crenshaw Early in the morning of September 29, 1864, two Union corps under the command of Benjamin Butler crossed the James with the goal of overwhelming Robert E. Lee's army and capturing Richmond. The Confederate defenders were vastly outnumbered; many were inexperienced and they were without coordinated leadership. Fort Harrison and the other works in the Chaffin's Farm area were the keys to the defense. What ensued was a contest between the resilience of the Confederates and the Union's ability to capitalize on one of its greatest opportunities. Doug Crenshaw is a strategic IT sourcing manager who has studied history at Randolph-Macon College and the University of Richmond. A volunteer for the Richmond National Battlefield Park, Crenshaw is an avid history enthusiast. He is a member of the Richmond Civil War Roundtable, and is a speaker, presenter and tour leader. His first book, Fort Harrison and The Battle of Chaffin's Farm, was nominated in the nonfiction category for a Library of Virginia Literary award. Message from Our President JANUARY. Welcome to 2015! I hope that everyone enjoyed the holidays and got to spend time with family and friends (and maybe got some new Civil War books..). I first want to thank the membership for your confidence in me as your President. In looking at the schedule that Bill Welsch has put together, we will have an exciting year! I also want to emphasize that this is your round table. A great deal happens behind the scenes and many people commit their time to make it work (and look seamless). That said, I'd like to ask that you consider serving as an officer - either now or in the future. Or step up to volunteer, we have many tasks that don't require a great deal of time (some do, we'll let you know!) And since this is your round table, I welcome your thoughts. Please feel free to call or email me anytime with suggestions, improvements, ideas, etc. Bert
