Message from Our President
Each month I tell everyone that I will see them at Tuesday's meeting.
Although this sounds like the usual greeting I extend it with true
sincerity.
Now in addition to this I would like to send you some information on
something that really works and works well. You have to have a Library
of Virginia card to access the following.
The American Civil War Research Database. Obviously, I know that many
of you are quite familiar with this database. If you have an LVA card
you can access this from home. On the LVA website click Using the
Collections Database and eBooks > Military > American Civil War Research
Database, When it requests your card number insert this in its entirety
including the first four numbers, the nine zeros, and then the remaining
5 digits.
Proquest Civil War Era (1840-1865). This is a digital collection of
2000 pamphlets and eight newspapers. Click Using the Collections>
Database and eBooks > Newspapers and Magazines > Proquest Civil War Era.
Again insert your card number when required.
I have tried both of these tonight and they do work. There are some
other sites of Civil War interest available through LVA as well so look
around.
Good searching and will see you Tuesday night.Brent
University of Richmond class
"Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley"
The Shenandoah Valley was the "breadbasket of the Confederacy" and
served as an avenue of invasion for both the Federal and Confederate
armies during the war. Led by Jack Mountcastle, this non-credit course
is scheduled for 7-9 PM on four Monday evenings beginning on October
14th. The class will review Stonewall Jackson's fascinating Valley
Campaign, the impacts of war on the civilian population of the Valley,
and the summer campaign of 1864, during which the Shenandoah Valley was
seized by Federal forces. The course concludes with a bus tour of
selected battlefields of the 1862 and 1864 campaigns on Saturday,
November 9th. To enroll, just pick up a registration form at the August
or September meetings. You may also enroll on-line by visiting

FYI
Gary, I read this article about the history of a Confederate flag and
thought you might want to put the link into the newsletter for members.
It is a fascinating story of a flag's journey. Art Ritter
