Bills' Memory - I was there

Jim Kelly once said that no one could cover Steve Tasker as a wide receiver and he proved it that day. 

Steve Tasker had the most productive offensive game of his career as a Wide Receiver as he racked up 160 yards on 6 catches with 2 touchdowns vs. NJ Jets. His 160 yards receiving vs. Jets was 8 more yards than he recorded in his first 10 seasons in the league. 

Unfortunately his kamikaze catches made him a target for the Jets' back-field and he injured his knee in the game.

1962 Apr  10 Born in Smith Center, Kansas
Fall 1981
 After one year at Dodge City Community College transferred to Northwestern University being recruited by Dennis Green.
1982-1985
 At Northwestern, Tasker set a school record for career average in yards per return in kickoffs (24.3) and punts (17.9).
Spring 1985 Houston Oilers selected him 226th in the 1985 NFL Draft (2rd WR chosen by Oilers) in 9th round as return specialist.

 Graduated with a degree in Communications.
1986 Nov 7
 Steve Tasker is activated from injury list and is picked up by Bills on waiver.
1986 Nov 9 Tasker's first game as a Bill; also Marv Levy's first game as head coach, a 16-12 victory over Steelers.
1986 Nov 23 Blocked a punt that resulted in a field goal
1987 Nov  8 Blocked a punt for a safety vs. Denver.
1988 Sep 25 Blocked a punt against Pittsburgh which was picked up and returned 5 yards for a TD. 
1994 Jan 15 Longest Kickoff Return (67 yards) during Buffalo vs LA Raiders game
1997 Sep 22 Steve Tasker resigns after being waived for a game. He was waived so the Bills could activate receiver Mitchell Galloway from the practice squad to return for a game.
1997 Dec 14 Steve Tasker plays last game at Rich Stadium. He was honored by being the only captain to go out for the coin toss.
1997 Dec 21 Steve Tasker plays his last game in loss in Green Bay; he is ejected from game for accidentally touching a referee.
1998 May  5 Former Buffalo special teams standout Steve Tasker is hired by CBS to be a game analyst on its coverage this coming season. Tasker retired after 1997 season.
2000 Aug  2 Named to NFL's All-Time Team. The team was selected by the 36 voters for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
2001 Jun  5 Named to 2001 Class of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.

Why does Steve Tasker belong in
the NFL Hall of Fame?

Most Valuable Player award (1993 Pro Bowl) -  the first special teams player to be named the most valuable player

Seven appearances in the Pro Bowl  1987, 90-95 (six consecutive appearances)

Voted into the pro bowl as special teams player during season when he did not play special teams.

He is the standard for all other special team players ('Steve Tasker like ability')

Pro Bowl appearance his very first year with Buffalo.

Jim Kelly on Steve Tasker:

"He is, without a doubt, the greatest special teams player ever to play the game," says Pro Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly, whose message to the Hall of Fame selection committee is this: Talk to special teams coaches around the league to get an idea of how valuable Tasker was to the Bills teams of the early '90s.

"Get their opinion of Steve Tasker," Kelly says, "and he'd be a shoo-in. … There was nobody, nobody like Steve Tasker."
