Name, injury description |
Short descriptions of the injuries and return dates (if known).
Rudy Seanez - stress fracture in elbow. |
Rudy has a stress fracture in his pitching elbow, and is most likely done for the season. I believe he is
eligible to return if the Braves go to the World Series, but don't expect it. He should be back for Spring
Training 2000. Even though he has been quoted in the past as saying that one more arm injury would lean him
towards retirement, he probably will stick it out. He has a good thing going in Atlanta, so he will be back.

Greg Maddux - fractured bone in wrist. |
Greg slightly fractured a bone in his wrist while diving for a ground ball, but will be
fine for the rest of the season, and is already back into the rotation.
Odalis Perez - strained elbow ligament. |
Odalis complained of elbow pain late in his starts, and it became apparent to everyone during a start in Florida.
He was examined and the elbow damage required Tommy John surgery. He is expected to miss at least a full season,
perhaps longer. Don't expect him back until late 2000 - more likely 2001.
Javy Lopez - pulled knee ligament. |
Javy strained a ligament in his knee while sliding into second base around 1/3 of the way through the season,
and was placed on the 15-day disabled list. After making a return to the lineup, he re-injured the knee and was
shut down. Successful surgery was performed, and he will be back in 2000. Don't believe the reports that you hear
saying he will never catch again - they are not true.
Brian Jordan - sore wrist. |
Brian was hit on the wrist with a pitch by Mike Thurman in June, and the pain has been
getting progressively worse. He has been receiving cortizone injections and the pain
should be held down enough for him to continue playing, as he has been.
John Smoltz - sore elbow. |
John's injury is the same one that has put him on the DL 4 times in the last 2 seasons, but
he has altered his delivery some, which reduces the stress and pain on his elbow. He
should be alright for the rest of the season.
Kerry Ligtenberg - strained elbow ligament. |
Kerry tore an elbow ligament back in Spring Training in an outing early in the season, and was immediately
shut down for the year. Successful surgery was performed, and he should be back with the team sometime in the
middle of 2000. Don't expect him around at the beginning of the year.
Andres Galarraga - Lymphoma. |
Andres was diagnosed with a form of cancer called lymphoma back before the season started, and will miss the
entire 1999 season. As of now, he should make a full recovery and return to the team as a player next year.
He is currently serving as a coach for the team during the last days of treatment.
