Sai is dense. Yes. Not stupid, dense. Best friends with Katsumi since junior high, the two boys are incredibly close, and Sai considers him his best friend ever. The thought that Katsumi might like him as more than just a friend has never crossed his mind. He knows that some boys like boys, but it's 'something that happens to other people'. If he found out, he'd be suprised, but perfectly willing to stay friends with Katsumi.

Sai is Good Hearted and Well Meaning, though he doesn't understand half the things he might. He knows Katsumi's parents died and whenever the anniversary comes around (he marked it on his calender) he brings presents for the boys. He has no idea that Taka and Nikki are going out, and probably never will. Another example of his essential Good Heartedness is his perfet willingness to sacrifice a hand to try to save the Sensei. His only angst is that it didn't succeed. Currently, he's responding a lot better to it than some might, being telekenetic. He doesn't get why Katsumi's so frantic to see he's all right.

Another thing Sai doesn't get is why Doink won't go out with him. He likes her. He really, really likes her. He is currently going on the theory that she likes him, since she hasn't done ANYTHING to say otherwise than constantly talk him out of dates. If she told him, he'd be hurt, but he'd back off. As it is, he's gonna keep trying, and not even know what it's doing to his best friend.
