About Me

My name is Jerry Emerson, Web page and graphics designer for Imagine Graphics. Before getting into the above mentioned endeavors, I was a professional magazine cartoonist for more than 25 years. I sold to many magazines, including:
  • Omni
  • Saturday Review
  • Sat. Evening Post
  • Readers Digest
  • TV Guide
  • Family Circle
  • National Enquirer
  • New Woman
  • Parade
  • Boys Life
  • Science Digest
  • Medical Economics
My cartoons have also been reprinted in Medical and English text books and in science books and periodicals, courtesy of Omni Magazine. In the late seventies, I collaborated with a writer friend to produce a cartoon book called "The Wacky World of Skiing", now out of print.Axle, from The Robotsons Locally, I produced a cartoon strip for "The Community Advertiser", called "The Robotsons". "The Robotsons" lasted several years, but I have a fondness still for the strange robot family I created. I hope to introduce more members of "The Robotsons" to my Web page visitors shortly. (Axle is pictured here, a sort of mechanical Archie Bunker, whose idea of equality is disliking all humans equally.)

How I Do Cartoons

I am happy to announce that I am the animator of the Pepper Girls at
PepperTown USA, a company producing hot sauces in Van Nuys California. The Pepper Girls are six pieces of original art done in the Pin Up style of the 40's by artist Penelope. The fun and sexy art appears on the hot sauce labels. I was commissioned to animate these labels for the company's Web page. The key to doing these animations successfully was in preserving the quality of Penelope's original art by duplicating it in my redrawings and image manipulations. In this way only could I maintain the integrity of her work and hence my own. (You can see the Pepper Girl sauces in the new Buena Vista movie "The Holy Man" directed by Steve Herek and starring Jeff Goldblum and Eddie Murphy.)
I am also happy to have done caricature animation for Fox Broadcasting Company's showtunes.com. This Web site is in the developmental stage right now, but I'll let you know when it's officially up so you may visit.

How I Do Cartoons

My drawing tools used to be the cartoonist's old standbys: fountain pen, India ink and brushes. Then I discovered what I could do with a computer and my favorite draw program, so I put away the old tools to use my new tools exclusively. I still draw the basic cartoon by hand, except I now use a mouse. Instead of ink and water color washes, I now use gradient and texture fills that I create myself. These methods help me to produce cartoons with great color depth and detail. I think I've managed to come very close to the line quality I achieved with pen and ink. In one respect I've surpassed my pen and ink drawings by adopting a painterly approach to cartooning with the computer.

It takes 3 hours to produce a complete cartoon--4 to 6 if animated--like the caricatures you'll see in my gallery. Cartoons that don't require the attention of a caricature, however, may be produced within 2 hours. I hope you'll notice the difference in quality between my cartoons and others you've seen on the Web--mostly clip art. Clip art has its place, but I can create cartoons to fill your specific needs--one-of-a-kind cartoons no one else will ever have.

Now that you know a little about me and how I work to produce my cartoons, please visit my galleries. You may find my talents useful in helping your Web pages come to life with good humor and quality drawings.
