James Howe
James Howe has three series for children.
Bunnicula is the series that qualifies this site for the May
I Suggest ... ? Favorite Books and Authors's Merit of Approval
for Appropriate Halloween material for younger children. There is
no violence or gore in the stories normally associated with "vampires".
Bunniculas' only victims are vegetables, whom we victimize daily
(or should be if we are getting our daily requirements from the
five food groups).
Mr. Howe also has more than one title to help develop the
social conscience in children and a couple of books to help
children prepare for and reduce the trauma of going to
kindergarten for the first time or into the hospital.
... and here is James Howe's works. Enjoy the exploration.
The
Bunnicula Series
with Chester and Howard.
Bunnicula
with co-author Deborah
Howe and illustrator
Alan
Daniel.
Sequoyah Children's Award Winner, 1981-82.
Reading level: Ages 9-12
This is not only a delightful tale, it is an award winning
book. It iwas voted the winner of the Sequoyah Award by the
school children of Oklahoma in 1982.
Howard and Chester are a dog and cat. Easy going Howard is a
perfect balance to Chester's hyperactive and imaginative
restlessness. Chesters restlessness is triggered by the arrival
of a new family member found on a seat in a movie theater. The
Monroe family had gone to see Dracula and discovered a rabbit
lovingly wrapped up with a note in an ancient Romanian language
(Howard recognizes the language because it is in his background.)
Chester becomes suspicious of the little fellow and begins to
educate himself about vampires. He feels his suspicions justified
when the vegetables in the refrigerator began to turn white
overnight ... and while there is never any firm proof that
Bunnicula is a bunny vampire, things really point suspiciously in
that direction.
This fictional spoof of the vampire legend provides
amusement and gentle suspense as Chester pursues his goal to
reveal Bunnicula as a vampire.

Howliday
Inn
With illustrator Lynn
Munsinger
In this second of the series, the Monroe family is heading
for vacation. Harold and Chester are booked into into the Chateau
Bowwow (a fancy name for a pet boarding kennel) until their
return. Chester senses something horribly wrong at the Chateau
and believes there are werewolves in the compound. When one of
the tenants disappear, Chester suspects foul play ... even
murder. Then Chester disappears and it's up to Harold and the
other boarders at the Chateau to find out what's going on ... and
since no one knows who's guilty, suspicions and rumors are flying
... read to find out if the fur does.

The
Celery Stalks at Midnight
With author James Howe.
The new addition to the Monroe's pet family is a young
Dachsund puppy named Howie. Chester, or "Pop" as Howie
insists on calling him, is on to another mystery. His latest
theories concern the fate of the vegetables the nocturnal rabbit
drains of juice. He suspects they become living zombies
controlled by Bunnicula. His concern escalates when Bunnicula
disappears from his cage. Chester followed by Howie and "Uncle"
Harold begins a quest to locate and dispose of the pale
vegetables supposedly drained by Bunnicula. Harold, of course, is
less than enthusiastic about the adventure since Bunnicula's
status as a vampire has never been proven. In fact, he is quite
fond of the little fellow. Yet even Harold must admit they find a
LOT of white veggies to pierce with wooden toothpicks (Chester's
version of the wooden stake) and the Monroe boys are acting a lot
like vampires today ...
