biography:
Ten years, fifteen number one hits, one-hundred and twenty
million records with one woman's face on them all. That face
belongs to Mariah Carey, the best selling and recording artist
of the ever. This is only one of Mariah Carey’s claim to
fame! Mariah Carey sky scraped onto the musical charts right out
of high school with a number one single Vision Of Love
from her debut which then was followed by three other number one
hits from her first release. Mariah Carey has done more in ten
years than most singers will come close to doing in a lifetime.
Mariah grew up in the center of New York with her single mother.
Her father and mother divorced when she was very young and her
mother could barely pay the bills. Her father had a
Venezuelan background and her mother Irish. She is a
beautiful multiracial woman with tanned skin, a slim figure, and
beautiful honey brown hair. She has an older brother
and sister who moved out when she was only five and basically
grew up as an only child.
Mariah’s singing career began before the even in school!
Her mother, an opera singer taught Mariah the basics in singing.
She often says that her singing is what has gotten her through
the hard times. Mariah struggled through high school and was
given the name Mirage because she was never there!
She spent most of her time writing songs, and making demo tapes.
Finally, after many years, she went to a party where she met
Tommy Matola the C.E.O. of Columbia Records. Mariah
convinced him to take her demo tapes. He listened to them
on his way home and presented her with a contract which she
signed moments later.
After Mariah joined she started to record her first album. To
this day she has still not taken a rest from her constant
recording. In ten years Mariah Carey’s name was on
multi-platinum records such as her self titled debut album, Emotions,
a live album (MTV Unplugged), Music Box, a
Christmas record, Daydream, Butterfly, #1’s
(a record including her thirteen of her number one hits), Rainbow,
Glitter which was the soundtrack to Mariah's own movie
and a double CD Greatest Hits Album. What an
achievement! Mariah was also named the "Artist of The
Decade" at the Blockbuster Music Awards in 1999, the
Achievement Award at the American Music Awards in January 2000.
She also had the longest running single at number one, called One
Sweet Day (duet with Boyz 2 Men). Hundreds of awards,
hundreds of records, hundreds of fans, Mariah Carey is known
throughout the world!
After being marrying to her producer Tommy Matola for seven
years Mariah got a divorce. She then took a well disserved
year off from recording. Then in no time she was back with
another number one hit, called Honey which entered the
charts at number one! After her divorce
Mariah was said to be dating ever man in the country.
There were rumors of Mariah dating Leonardo DiCaprio and many
other celebrities. Things were also said such as, Mariah had
been trapped with Matola and that he abused her. She
denies everything saying that it is all lies and claims that
they are still friends. Mariah has always been
attacked by the media for example being on Mr. Blackwell's worst
dressed list, but has managed to get through it all. She
claims to only live for the good things in life.
Lately Mariah has been acting like everything is fine and says
she enjoys being free (from her marriage), but has changed her
dress code a little bit. Mariah has went form full body
coverage to almost nothing. On numerous accounts Mariah has
attended award shows and been on the cover of magazines wearing
scarce amounts of clothing, and most agree that the phase will
pass. Mariah’s voice has brought her through it all and it
will continue to keep her going. In one of her latest
songs the lyrics are “they can try but they can’t take
that away from me” and she Mariah believes it's true.
Everyone has different stages in their lives as they change and
Mariah has the right to do the same.
In
January 2000 Mariah announced her first world tour in eight
years and fans were dying to get their hands on the tickets,
willing to wait hours in a line up or listen to a busy signal.
It has taken her a while to get ready for this tour and everyone
is excited to see the diva in action.
How one young girl from the inner part of New York City can
become a multi-million selling artist is beyond comprehension
but Mariah Carey has done it. One girl right out of high
school has surpassed every record, has beaten all the standards.
She is rewriting history and it has only taken her ten years,
what an amazing accomplishment. The name Mariah Carey will
definitely go down in history and she will be looked back at as
