As often as I visit the Monument, I never tire of it. Each
time as I approach the park, I begin to anticipate the great time that I'm going
to have just enjoying the park. My heart just kind of skips a beat when I first
get a glimpse of the lighthouse as I pass Battery Ashburn. I could go into a
long discussion about why it is called Battery Ashburn but I'll go into that
another time. |
|
As you round the curve past Battery Ashburn, the entry sign
comes into view to welcome you to the park. |
|
As you approach the entrance to the park, look above the sign
and you will see one of the 3 most visible pillboxes built during WWII. In this
picture, it looks the antenna is growing out of the top of it. Actually the
tower is outside the far side of the monument. This particular pillbox is
occasionally open during Ranger tours. Another pillbox is located below the
whale-watching booth and another is next to the antenna. |
|
Next, you will come up to the entrance to the park. Here a
friendly and helpful ranger will greet you. The ranger will give you a brochure
with information on the park and will answer any basic questions that you may
have. |

Here is another view of the entrance to the park taken from
the oceanview parking lot. |
