Another Stop On Mike
Nelson's Virtual Tour of San Diego
Cabrillo National Monument
Founder's Day, August 25, 1999
Linda | Luke & Sandra | Sandra & Emily |
Cabrillo National Monument opens its doors to the public every August 25 in commemoration of the founding of the National Park Service in 1913. It celebrates in two ways. First, it waives the entrance fee for the day. Second, it opens the lighthouse tower to the public. Guests, in groups of 10, are allowed in the tower and the catwalk for approximately 10 minutes to see the Fresnel lens up close and to enjoy the spectacular view.
As part of the celebration, volunteers in costume and character interact with the guests to entertain and inform them about the history of the lighthouse, Cabrillo National Monument and San Diego. Luke comes in character as an 1887 era businessman. Sandra wears one of her 80s style dresses and stays in character. Linda (in the blue dress) acts in third person. Hats off to all three for donating time and skills to make the event work. I also want to commend Ranger Emily for her efforts and coordination of the day.
The next time the tower will be open to the public will be on Monday, November, 15, 1999, in honor of the 144th anniversary of the first lighting of the lighthouse in 1855.
