IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING WHY I HAVE SEPARATE LYRICS TO THE LIVE PERFORMANCES: As we all know, when a performer performs something live, it's got slight differences to the original. The same goes with Alanis, so when she sings something, it's a little different each time, so that's why I felt like I should put up lyrics to her live performances, as well as the interviews that often go with them. In addition, since my lyrics include the um's oh's ooh's and other sounds like that, and they change greatly for each performance, that is why I have included them.

Alanis Morissette: No those are people
Dave: And and so you have to contact them and you say 'guess what Larry I'm gonna put you in the song' right?
Alanis: Well I don't have to but.. I... yes
Dave: Well you could put them in, yeah because it's just the first name, it's not like you're giving their mailing address.
Alanis: Right, so they're....
Dave: But you were nice enough to contact them and ask them
Alanis: Some of them I contacted. A few of them...
Dave: Good
Alanis: ... Um some of whom I hadn't spoken to in a long time...
Dave: Good
Alanis: ... Just to check in with them because you know they're gonna recognise themselves and by default some people are gonna hear this time so...
Dave: Yeah, and and what was the response when all of a sudden they get the call and yes they're gonna be use your name in the song and stuff, were they pleased about that or...?
Alanis: Um, they were pleased about the it in that I used sort of variations of their names or nicknames so it wasn't specifically them and the very fact that I connect with them in and of itself I think made them feel kind of well we're connected...
Dave: Yeah
Alanis ... and the songs, sometimes I write songs and it allows me to kind of get away with not connecting with people but this song kind of forced me to
Dave: Because as we know, as we go through our lives not all relationships with uh people uh are are pleasant, end up pleasant
Alanis: Right
Dave: Uh and I think you called that to our attention in earlier work.
[Laughter] [Applause] [Dave Laughing]
Dave: That's pretty good. Everybody liked that song just because of just the the the aggression and the venom. Just raw and unbridled and just like oh sure of course we've all parked in that space, you know what I'm saying?
Alanis: Yeah I do know what you're saying
Dave: Uh so now you know we talked about you, the first time you were on a network TV show was ours back in 1995... and tell me... give me an idea of things you've done in your life since then that you had not done before
Alanis: Well we toured for almost a year and a half
Dave: Do you like that, is that invigorating or just nuts?
Alanis: It was crazy last time around, I have a little more perspective on it this time...
Dave: Um-hmm
Alanis: ... So I think it would be less nuts, um and I took a year and a half off, because it had been so overwhelming that I needed to kind of...
Dave: Yeah
Alanis: ... take some time and assimilate everything and get back to normal, see whatever that means.
Dave: But you went and participated in these, in the the triathlon...
Alanis: Yeah
Dave: ... which to me just seems like well, that's... well you should be checked; because that's not... it's bikin, it's swimming, and it's uh, you finish up with a big run...
Alanis: Yeah
Dave: ...or what does that, what does that do to you mentally, does that exhilarate you or does that, do you find that wearying?
Alanis: It was exhilarating in that I had kind of put all those things on the back burner for so many years and um just wanted to use my body as an instrument as opposed to the ornamant that society had sort of you know made me believe it was solely, so it was great
Dave: Is it safe to say you're in the top physical condition of your life?
Alanis: Uh this very second, no, but what I was doing then, yes
Dave: Every morning when I get up [Clears throat] before I do anything else; eight sit-ups.

Alanis: It's going so well. I just want to before we start...

Alanis: I found out through my sources and I actually wanna play

because you were 14
Alanis: Right
Rosie: You were 14, you had a Linda Blair look goin' on there you
know

Alanis: A few people have actually told me that
Rosie: Yeah with that long curly perm, I used to have one of
those too
Alanis: I feel like I looked older when I was 14 than I do now,
it's very funny how that works
Rosie: Now wa-, was your, your family in show biz? 'Cause I know
you did that, the Nickelodeon show and this, did they push sort
of for show
Alanis: They didn't push me, they supported me. My father was an
avid sort of music fan and my mom was as well, um, but we weren't
technically a music or entertainment industry family then, no
Rosie: No, it wasn't like she was a state mom your mom or
anything
Alanis: No
Rosie: No
Alanis: They were great though, it was me that was sort of
fuelling it all and really passionate about it all the time
Rosie: And when you were on the Nickelodeon show did you always
have aspiration to be a songwriter and singer?
Alanis: I, I just loved expressing myself in whatever shape or
form, writing, painting, dancing, acting, whatever could get the
energy out, it was, was something that I was kind of attracted to
... yeah
Rosie: Yeah, did it start with the poetry, because the lyrics are
so unbelieveably profound, and I mean the, all of your lyrics
read like poems on their own you know?
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: Sometimes you read lyrics and it sound like, oh boy you
need a song for this [Laughter] oh duh, you know for yours, it,
they stand on their own as poems, did you start doing that,
or...?
Alanis: Mmm-hmm, I started definitely writing poetry and then I
was younger and then as I got older through the teen years, I
didn't write very personal music 'cause I was a little afraid to
kind of be that vulnerable, and then as I got older I kind of
merged the poetry and the music into one which is the most
fulfilling way to write for me now
Rosie: Yeah. And the first CD, Jagged Little Pill, boy that was
uh astoundingly successful [Applause], did it shock you?
Alanis [over the applause]: uh
Rosie [over the applause]: A little bit?
Alanis: [over the applause]: Yeah
Rosie: I mean 'cause you sort of had really instant fame
Alanis: It was pretty overwhelming at the time I think I kind of
withdrew and kind of got into this self-protective mode and then
I took a year and a half off after the tour which was great yeah
Rosie: Which is what that song Thank U India is about right,
'cause...
Alanis: It came from that yeah
Rosie: 'Cause when I was listening to that I thought "You
see? This is what happened after the fame, she had to go to India
and she had some solitude and disillusionment with show business
and it, it inspired her to express this!"
Alanis: Eh he he, exactly
Rosie: I'm way too invested, I feel like I know you 'cause I know
your lyrics
Alanis: Well that's, that's okay
Rosie: It is?
Alanis: Did you go through the same thing, did you stop ever,
have you ever stopped?
Rosie: Well no, but I didn't have what you had, sort of a, a, big
success quickly, I sorta been doing this for a long time, I had
little incremental success, you know?
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: But it was sort of overnight for you, you were sor--
everywhere the record number one for so long
Alanis: Yeah, it was intense
Rosie: People like me singing on their show every day
[Alanis laughs]
Rosie: I'm sure it got annoying, didn't it
Alanis: I loved it
Rosie: I work out to your CD
Alanis: I heard

Alanis: Yeah, unbeknownst to me. I quickly learned to watch my
rear-view mirror as I drive in that city. It's quite a big
culture shock from, from having lived in Ottawa and Toronto in
Canada, where I didn't really need to deal with that, and goin'
to LA apparently I did
Rosie: And did you, uh, quickly decide to move home like I
would've?
Alanis: I didn't, I didn't...
Rosie: You didn't?
Alanis: ...actually I wrote a song that day, um..

Rosie: Now do people that you have uh broken up with ever call

your name and wonder why it's not there', is that about me?"

Alanis: Some people, um, especially on the last record, um,
definitely asked me whether it was about them, I think the very
fact that they were asking whether it was about them in and of
itself kind of said more than any kind of response that I could
give

Alanis Morissette: I have no idea who my neighbours are actually
but I probably will find out

really and there, there needing to be more tents and more
opportunities for different styles of music to be heard which is
amazing.

Bill: Commented on uh "We are golden" do you think you
could summarize this generation that easy? And if you can what
would Alanis Morissette's take on it be?
Alanis: On this era? Um... "melting pot" -- those are
two words -- but it's pretty melting pottish and I dig it
Bill: Yeah?
Alanis: Yeah
Bill: Is there a sense of peace, at all, doing something like
this. 'Cause I know a lot of your music, if anyone's read the
lyrics you're a very spiritual... that kinda goes hand-in-hand
with Woodstock
Alanis: [mumbles almost as if to herself] what it was founded on
[speaking to Bill now] Um I think there's a lot of people here to
spread love and peace and harmony and I think there's a lot of
people here to do everything other than that and I feel like
there's a lot of consciousness and unconsciousness and everything
so that's part of the charm of getting this amount of people
together is that you get everything.

stuff though?

Hosts Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer are discussing GMA's Millennium time capsule, a time capsule ABC has put together to be buried in front of their broadcast centre in New York.
Charles: ... and we have for entertainment not just the herald trumpets bu Alanis Morissette is here to do a couple of songs today. Her album I think to some extent uh, her debut album, really typifies this decade, the last decade of the 20th Century. It was the largest selling album ever, uh, Jagged Little Pill, by a female artist, and she's gonna be here to do some music in this half hour. In the 8:30 half hour we have a considerable crowd her: not just to hear the trumpets, not just to see us, but also to hear Alanis Morissette, so she'll be along in a little while...

Charles: I am not bringing
you news here when I say Alanis Morissette electrified the rock
music world with her debut album Jagged Little Pill, it went on
to become the biggest selling album [Clip of Alanis performing
You Oughta Know live in '95 or '96 plays while he talks] ever
recorded by a female singer and today Billboard Magazine will
announce that the album has won yet another place in music
history, it has been chosen as album of the decade. [The clip
ends] And we are delighted to have Alanis Morissette with us this
morning, [To Alanis] did you know that?
Alanis: I just found out myself
Charles: Neat
Alanis: That's very sweet yeah
Charles: Neat, it's so amazing I mean the largest selling album
ever by a female performer, that, that outdoes the Streisand,
that outdoes Ella, that outdoes Aretha, Judy Garland, Billie
Holiday... was that almost overwhelming to you?
Alanis: I, I, I don't really think in those terms. I just think
it's a poor chance for great things when people are open, or not
open for that matter, to hearing music that comes from a very
channeled honest place. It's really very comforting actually.
Charles: When it came out, people saw it as angry music, you
didn't did you?
[A car in the street honks loudly three times]
Alanis: I don't think it was one-dimensionally angry, certainly,
um definitely um an explosion of sorts I had repressed a lot of
those emotions for a long time and when it came time to write the
record I allowed myself to release what was in my sub-conscious
and thtat was what was lying within
Charles: WHat I tihnk is striking is you've re-recorded some of
this music for the new album, MTV Unplugged
Alanis: Mm-hmm
Charles: Is it fair to say they're more, they're softer more
tempered versions of these songs?
Alanis: Yeah you know I'm getting into different layers of the
songs, and breaking it down to its skeletion form is one of my
favourite things to do
Charles: Well we'll let people judge for themselves, this song,

Charles: Not long after her
debut album became one of the most popular records in rock
history, Alanis Morissette decided she needed a break and for the
next year or so she traveled the world. One day while trecking in
the Himalayas, she wrote a song in her diary called That I Would
Be Good and it's on her new CD MTV Plugged [sic] and she's gonna
be playing it for us in just a few moments. We're gonna put
Jagged Little Pill into the time capsule, which as we mentioned,
sold more than any other, well... [We'll not] got through that
again.
Alanis: Huh [forced laugh]
Charles: But we asked you for a suggestion of what album we
oughta put in, what did you suggest?
Alanis: I suggested Graceland by Paul Simon
Charles: How come?
Alanis: I remember when I was younger um [loud honks resonate
from street] I heard the album I was just blown away. My father
loved it, he was playing it all the time, and I heard it and I
just loved how he integrated his travels into this music and his
awareness and uh I think he's a genius
Charles: Well it's also a reference back to Elvis, which is
important...
Alanis: yes
Charles: ... but I hate the idea that you heard it when you were
young! [Laughs]
Diane Sawyer: I was gonna say, I heard Paul Simon was going on
Prozac...
[All three laugh]

Alanis: No, it's bath salts and moisturizer and shampoo
Rosie: How did you make bath salts???
Alanis: You take epsom salts, and put all your oils in it and
your acoutrements and mix them around. [Alanis laughs, joined by
audience]
Rosie (Still in disbelief): Oh... I thought you just bought a
different jar and said 'oh yeah it's homemade', ya dumped it in,
ya know?! [Alanis laughs] ... no but that's very very nice, I
thank you very much
Alanis: Oh, so sweet
Rosie: New Year's Ever, I'll take a bath with that...
Alanis: good
Rosie: ... And think'a you
Alanis: A long one hopefully
Rosie: All right...
Alanis: You deserve it
Rosie: ...Great to see you
