A Canadian Pearl Jam History
This section last updated on 07 Oct 2000
Over the past few weeks, I've been building quite a pile of research and
trivia concerning Pearl Jam's activities north of the border. Things like concerts, appearances, interviews -- that kind of thing.
So, seeing as I sort of do a little web site here and stuff, I figure I may as well go ahead and publish a little bit of what I've seen and heard about the band and their Canadian experience. Included in this history are concerts, interviews, special promotions, newspaper articles -- that kind of thing. Of course, in order to discourage legal troubles, I've made known my when needed, along with any links that may be useful and whatnot. A lot of the info comes from the Jam! Media web site. Jam! is basically a Canadian entertainment authority and features news and information from a variety of sources, including many Canadian newspapers and gazettes such as the Ottawa Sun, Edmonton Sun, etc.
While many of the concert entries can be traced back to public knowledge and records, some entries come from what I consider to be the source for Pearl Jam concert info: the Five Horizons Concert Chronology, compiled and created by Jam-fanatic Jean Bruns.
So I guess that's pretty much it. So here, enjoy my little Canadian Pearl Jam chronology...
- 29 Oct 91 - The band's first Canadian appearance. Pearl Jam plays with the Smashing Pumpkins at Concert Hall, Toronto.
- 30 Oct 91 - The band plays with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Smashing Pumpkins at Concert Hall, Toronto.

- 5 Apr 92 - Pearl Jam plays in Quebec City.
- 21 July 92 - Lollapalooza comes to the UBCF in Vancouver.

- 27 June 95 - Pearl Jam and Canadian rock legend Neil Young collaborate to release album Mirrorball. Additionally, Pearl Jam released Merkinball, a two-song single accompanyment to Neil's album featuring the man himself providing some guitar work. Check out the Toronto Sun's reporting.
- 7 July 96 - Jeff Ament visits Toronto courtesy of The Edge 102.1. The visit wasn't exactly a Pearl Jam visit, though -- Jeff was in town to plug his own little side project, Three Fish. Check out Carolyn's web site for her own recollection of the experience.
- 23 July 96 - Jam! Showbiz reviews newly released Pearl Jam album, No Code.
- 27 Aug 96 - No Code is released world wide. See that Jam! Music has to say about it.
- 16 Sep 96 - Jam! Showbiz reviews tonight's Seattle show.
- 21 Sep 96 - Finally, after an extended break from touring, the band makes it back to play the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Fellow Pearl Jam-ophile Carolyn Richter has some words to say about that sucker, so visit her site. You can also read what Jam! Showbiz thought of the concert here, or catch the Toronto Sun review here.
- 10 Oct 97 - Just a few days before I moved to Mississauga, Stone Gossard made an appearance at The Edge 102.1 to plug his side project Brad's recently released album, Interiors. Check out Carolyn's site for more...
- 21 Jan 98 - All That's Sacred originally launched on that pile o' pap homepage service, Rampage (aka Neocerf). How historic!
- 28 Jan 98 - The Edmonton Sun reviews Yield.
- 29 June 98 - The Toronto Sun reviews the Chicago concert much to my chagrin.
- 19 July 98 - No pure Pearl Jam in two years! Jeez... Pearl Jam made their first Canadian tour stop for '98 at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver. Jam! Showbiz reports...
- 14 Aug 98 - MuchMusic premieres the first Pearl Jam video since the days of Ten, 'Do The Evolution'.
- 16 Aug 98 - The Toronto Sun prints an article entitled "Yield To Experience" in preparation for the upcoming Montreal and Barrie concerts.
- 20 Aug 98 - Pearl Jam plays at Molson Centre, Montreal. See what the Ottawa Sun has to say... ugh... 'Teenage Wasteland'?! You'd think they'd have some better entertainment editors there...
- 22 Aug 98 - Ah... my first Pearl Jam concert... the band plays a rockin' Molson Park, Barrie, ON. The Toronto Sun reviews the Molson Park concert, giving it a full five out of five stars. The page opposite features a Backstreet Boys review, who were playing in Toronto the night before as well. Sun rating: 2/5. Hmmm... for a paper that purports to love the 'Boys, as they even have posters of the guys on Saturday, they certainly didn't seem too enthusiastic about their live performances. To see the Toronto Sun review,
click here. And since this is my site, I may as well plug my own article, which you can read here.
- 24 Nov 98 - Live On Two Legs released world wide (Canada being no exception) with great fanfare in Pearljamfanville. Read what the Toronto Sun says, or check out what the Calgary Sun thinks of Live On Two Feet.
- 11 May 2000 - In preparation for their 2000 European tour, Pearl Jam plays the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. Tickets were available only from a radio contest held on CFOX 99.3 FM. Some 50 people were allowed in for free about a half-hour into the concert. All three members of R.E.M. were there, which kicks ass.
- 16 May 2000 - Binaural is released. The Calgary Sun review is here, the Edmonton Sun's review is here, and the Toronto Sun review is here.
- 26 Sept 2000 - Pearl Jam releases all 25 bootlegs from the 2000 European tour to retail storest that have been available online through the Ten Club and from pearljambootlegs.com since September 5th. Here's a Toronto Sun article.
- 04 Oct 2000 - Pearl Jam kicks off the second leg of the 2000 North American tour in Montreal.
- 05 Oct 2000 - The band rocks the Air Canada Centre. Check out the setlist and a review from the Toronto Sun.
And that's that. Odds are that I've missed a lot of stuff here, so by all means be sure and notify me.
So, uh... I guess that's it.
