The contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveller's map, the pilgrim's staff, the pilot's compass, the soldier's sword, and the Christian's charter. Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed. Christ is its grand subject, our good the design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgement, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibilty, will reward the greatest labour, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.
The Paradox Of Our Age
We have taller buildings but shorter tempers Wider freeways but narrower viewpoints. We spend more but have less We buy more but enjoy it less. We have bigger houses and smaller families More conveniences but less time. We have more degrees but less sense More knowledge but less judgement. We have more experts but more problems More medicine but less wellness. We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too little and lie too often. We have learned how to make a living but not a life. We have added years to life but not life to years. We've been to the moon and back But have trouble crossing the street to see the nieghbour. We've conquered outer space but not our inner being We've fouled the air and polluted the soul. We study more but learn less Plan more but accomplish less. We've learned to rush but not to wait We have higher incomes but lower morals More food but less appeasement. These are times of fast food and slow digestion Steep profits and shallow relationships. These are days of two incomes but more divorces. Of fancier houses but broken homes. It is a time when there is much in the show window And nothing in the stockroom. Much on earth but nothing in Heaven. Indeed it is all true!
