Falcons upset by Icecats-
The 4th place ice cats toppled the top seeds 3-1 in the best of 5 series. Daniel scored on a breakaway in a 5-2 loss during the final game, but it was not to be. Besides that goal, Daniel picked up 2 assists. He hasn't exactly had an easy return... I heard opponents were "testing" his shoulder, to say the least, but there are a few months of rest ahead for him now. Meanwhile, the coyotes have tied their series with the redwings, and take home ice today. Phoenix is carrying the momentum with a 7-4 win on Friday night, and they will have the "white-out" behind them today... meanwhile, the wings hope to be buoyed by the return of their leading scorer Brendan Shanahan, who will be a game time decision.

Calder cup time-
Daniel was sent back to Springfield this morning and played tonight in the first game of the eastern conference quaterfinals against the Worcester Icecats (a 5-3 loss). The coyotes' brass decided it would be better for Dan to get experience playing in the AHL play-offs instead of getting limited ice time with phoenix. They proclaimed his trial a success and said they could call him up later if needed.

Rookie of the year-
Guess who? None other than our very own Daniel! He beat out an impressive AHL rookie class to win the honor. Brière obviously also made the all-rookie team. He's been surpassed in ahl scoring being up with phoenix and with his shoulder problem, but his injury is apparently all better now (a lot quicker than expected I might add), although he was a healthy scratch tonight against Detroit. Let's hope I don't have to change the stats link back anytime soon=). *Dan bits updated & new article*

THN Future Watch-
Daniel was rated the 31st prospect for 1998 out of 50 no doubt due to his lack of stature, which is pretty disappointing to me, even if you consider that last year he wasn't rated at all! He is still the coyotes #1 prospect though, and as there are plenty of centers in phoenix right now, GM Bobby Smith doesn't want to "rush" him along. He's rated the best stickhandler and best hockey sense in the coyotes' system. Daniel is sandwiched between Mark Parrish and Dan Cleary on the list.

He shoots, he scores...uh oh-
That's right. In only his 2nd NHL game ever vs. LA, the rookie puts one home! Daniel scored off the feed from Gartner on a 2-on-1 play in the 2nd period to tie the score at 2-2. Now the bad news: in the 3rd period, Daniel was hit into the boards by a Kings' player and suffered an apparent separated shoulder which will sideline him for 2-4 weeks. "I don't even know who hit me," Briere said. "I just went into the corner, got checked by someone, and was squeezed against the boards. It didn't hurt, but then I started skating back to the bench and I lost all feeling in the shoulder." The coyotes have had a string of injuries lately, and if this keeps up, they're not going to have any one left to play! So I congratulate Dan on his 1st goal, but at the same time wish him a speedy recovery. Hopefully he'll recover as fast as he skates. The coyotes went on to lose to the kings 4-2, but they still hold a play-off spot. Allez à l'AZ central pour plus d'information.

The First Taste-
Dan was surely more than excited when he stepped onto NHL ice to face the Avalanche at home. I listened to the game on audionet, and it certainly sounded like he seemed relaxed, and happy, and created his share of opportunities. "Yes, but we didn't win the game and that's all that mattered to me," Briere said. He saw penalty killing time as well as power play time, and played with Gartner and Roenick. The offence went back and forth, with Turtle Clod scoring the last goal to win for the avs 4-3. Daniel didn't hit the score sheets offensively, ending up even for the night, but did get his 1st penalty for hooking. "I'm glad the first one is done now and I can concentrate on the next one and I won't be as nervous as the first game," Briere said. Oh, and I have managed to snag a copy of the game for archival purposes. Thanks K!=)

Update from Springfield-
The falcons won their 3rd straight game over Fredericton yesterday night 4-1. Daniel scored his 36th and added 2 assists, a pretty usual night for him so far this season! He's looking to become the 1st rookie since 88-89 to lead the league in scoring. I tell ya, this guy is never NOT hot- last week on rinkside, he was on half a dozen of the high-light clips, scoring and passing (and getting a great save made on him too by Denis). Folks in Canada can catch the show early Monday morning on TSN 12:30 am pst. Dan's also broken the franchise record for most points in a season, and is working on 2 more (if he hasn't already done so). He is currently the league leader in points, surpassing Steve Guolla by 1 point with 89 (thank TSN for fresh stats, stupid CANOE needs to update).

Update-
I added a couple things to the articles section of this page and a link to Excite. They are from LCS hockey, a really comprehensive website. Check it out! Also the Falcons have a chance to clinch a play-off berth this weekend with a win against providence tonight and they are now within 3 points of 1st place in the New England division. Oh, and so far, Dan has amassed 77 points with 32 goals-that puts him 3rd in league scoring!

AHL All-star spread in THN-
I wasn't aware of this, but my Hockey News just came today. There's a centerfold section about the AHL All star game about, what else-the AHL all-star game... there's a pic too with Dan. Just thought I'd let y'all know- it's the Feb.20 issue, you should still be able to find it!

Canada wins wild blow-out vs. Planet USA-
This game was the anti-thesis of the CHL prospects game. NO hitting, NO defense, NO intensity... you get the idea! What there was was offense...and lots of it, and lots of chances for Dan too. The game broke all sorts of scoring and shooting records-there were 106 shots in the game! At one point, Planet USA was up by 4 goals, and then Canada came back to tie it and eventually win. Dan had a pretty good game, picking up two assists on goals by Jamie Heward and Steve Guolla. The day before the game, the AHL held a skills competition- unfortunately TSN, in all its wisdom, decided to chop it into little bits and pieces for me. If someone knows how Dan did in the fastest skater, please LMK? We know how much of a speed demon this guy is! He did score during one of the breakaway relays but lost in the puck control to Alexei Yegorov and in the fastest skater to Barry Richter...Planet USA won this competition.

What else is new?-
DAMN! I just re-set the HTML and now I have to type this again... I forgot what I wrote! I am so mad! *censored* OK, where was I? Dan still leads rookie scoring and now he is 4th in points league-wide with 26 goals, 31 assists for 57 points. I also wanted to remind everyone to watch the AHL all-star game! I think it's on TSN for Canadian viewers. And I saw Dan on rinkside last week, if only for a nano-second (aka I need a satellite, NOW)! Hmmm, yes, I added a new section, which you probably noticed-courtesy of Melissa. I have no way of verifying the "bits," so send me any additions or corrections you have, eh? Oh, and a pic section too, but I don't necessarily recommend you going there=)...

Brière leads rookie scoring-
After re-checking the stats, I think I have it all figured out now. Dan is on top with 43 points, amassing 17 goals and 26 assists. League-wise, that puts him 6th in points scoring. Yay! I always knew those critics were wrong...

Springfield's Daniel Brière named BAUER AHL rookie of the month-
The AHL announced that Brière has been named the AHL rookie of the month for October. Brière amassed 13 points in 9 games to lead Springfield in its best start ever (6-1-2). On Oct. 18, Brière scored his 1st pro hat trick in a win over Adirondack. In recognition of his selection, Brière received a jade trophy and gave his jersey to the Falcons kid club.
