Berkeley Pier Nets Large Skate

BERKELEY, CA -- Saturday, January 3, 1998 was not a day to be out on the San Francisco Bay. Blustery winds and torrential rains had the California West Coast socked in, watching NFL football playoffs and sippin' the ol' hot toddie.
Jack, Steve and Ann were skating. Not with spinning wheels, helmets or wrist guards but with hooks, surf poles and live grassworms. With the Berkeley Municipal Pier as the platform, Jack and Steve walked to the end, and as is customary, heaved their wiggling lines half way to Alcatraz and let them find their way to the bottom. No floaters, please.
At about 12:30 pm, Steve hooked into a large Australian Skate, a cousin of the Pacific South Ray. After a tug or two, Steve landed the creature before kicking it off the stinky wood structure.
Jack and Steve will be cuttin' bait at the Pacifica Municipal Pier on Saturday, January 10. Wish us "good creature hunting."
