Kajol Mukherjee is one of the best and most beautiful actresses present today in the Indian Film Industry. In her career, which began in 1991, she has done various types of roles, varying from the tender and lovable dulhania in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge to the amazingly violent villain in Gupt. The versatility of her acting is just incredible, some examples of this being proved by films like Dushman, where on one hand she is brash, ebullient and fun-loving, and on the other hand she plays the role of a sober, timid type of character. This can also be seen in her latest hit, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, where in the first half, Kajol is a cool, college-going, tomboyish girl, and in the second half, she is so graceful, beautiful and mature. She is one person who needs not expose herself in order to earn fame; the beauty of her acting is sufficient to win the hearts of her audience, which is now a rare quality amongst her contemporaries. She not only has a pleasing achievement in acting, but also has a wonderful character. These qualities seem to enhance her grace and charm, and I guess this is the reason that she is my favourite actress.
It seems that all the females in Kajol’s family have been great actresses in their time, which is probably one reason why Kajol herself is so talented in this field. It started with her grandmother (Shobhana Samarth) being a great actress of her time, going on to her aunt (Nutan), known as one of the legendary actresses. Nutan was followed by Kajol’s mother (Tanuja) who has acted in many films as well, finally leading us to Kajol – she has now taken over the title of a legendary actress. In fact, Rani Mukherjee (Kajol's cousin) has also joined this line in a very successful manner with hits like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Ghulam. Kajol’s father (Somu Mukherjee) too is a film producer, making it clear that acting seems to be in her genes. Kajol is married to Mr. Ajay Devgan, as most people may already know. They tied the knot on on 24-Feb-99. They have both starred in quite a few films by now, out of which Pyar To Hona Hi Tha and Ishq seem to be the biggest successes. We hope to see both of them shine in the industry for the years to come too!
Although Kajol's carrier started with a flop, her debut and acting in the film was very much appreciated. She was just 16, and feels that she was very much childish, which she has slowly overcome as she has grown up. With it, she got the chance to act in better films such as Baazigar, which already led her to be known as one of the good actresses. Soon, she had achieved the title as one of the best actresses after her outstanding performance in Yeh Dillagi. Later came Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995 and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998, which really shot Kajol to the top position by the time she was 23. It seems that whether a film is good or not, Kajol's acting in it has always been much appreciated.
Kajol does not particularly appreciate the idea of people treating her as a celebrity, and would rather be treated as any person walking on the streets. Thus, too much attention may make her rude to her fans at times. On occasions, Kajol has commented that if she ever gets sick of movies, she will leave the industry without any regret. Kajol considers acting, unlike many of her competitors, as a hobby and treats it as a form of art. She concentrates more on her acting than on the financial success of the film. Kajol has a financial backing to not to rush into any film and give herself a bad reputation, thus saving us all some grief! She refuses to fall into the numbering business, telling her what her position in the industry is, and feels that she would like to respect all her fellow actresses by not competing with them. She tries to do her best without worrying about her position in the Indian film industry, which is another factor that makes her worthy of admiration.
