Mission of The Southern Regional Sickle Cell Assoc.
The mission of this organization is to provide education,screening, counseling, and support services to persons affected with sickle cell disease and the trait. Our goal is to ensure a network of partners dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle for patients with sickle cell disease.
Volunteers are needed and welcome. Call for information on how you can become a member or volunteer of the SRSCA.
Southern Regional Sickle Cell Association, Inc. Virginia Scott was founded by Virginia Scott with other concerned citizens of
Bridgeport, CT in 1985. the organization has continued to grow and has helped
many individuals through several programs:
Education Educational Literature has been disseminated to several thousands individuals a year.
Our S.C.O.P.E program educates students about Sickle Cell Disease and involves developing peer educators in the
schools.
Fundraising Financial support of the organization is by an annual Walk-A-Thon,
golf tournament, and corporate and individual donations. Revenue from the
Charity Basketball Game isdevoted to the Emma Butler Fund. Thisfund is
allocated to helping patients with the high cost of medications
and emergencies.
Support Service Since 1991, the organization has provided support services to
patients and their families under the supervision of a social worker.
Sickle Cell TestingThis is one of our most successful programs. In the past
two years we have tested 430 individuals for the disease and trait. Counseling
services are provided to those who have a positive result. The Southern
Regional Sickle Cell Association continues to function by human and financial
resources:
Special job training for seniors through the City of Bridgeport’s Senior
program where we have a part-time receptionist/clerk.
Apart-time secretarial aid through the University of Bridgeport’sWork-Study
Program.
