HOW TO
TRANSLOAD! A MUST FOR
WEBTV-ERS!
First of all-
What IS
"Transloading"?
TRANSLOADING is making a copy
of a picture, and moving it to your own server-
instead of directly "linking" to someone else's
files & server. When you link to someone else's
files, it is the same thing as sharing a "party
line" on a telephone. Know how you would get a
busy signal? Well, it's sort of different, but if literally hundreds- or, even
thousands
(Who knows? Maybe
millions!)
of people are all linked to
the same file, all on the same
server, there will be lots of
problems- see what I mean?
So,
learn to TRANSLOAD !
Make the pics & music you use
YOURS!
It is not some
scary, high-tech computer thingy! Don't be
afraid!
STEP
ONE: You must register with a Free Homepage Provider
( Like Geocities,Angelfire, etc. I recommend Tripod- the registration process
takes only minutes, & it is very easy! ), and get your own DIRECTORY, where your files can be
stored. (Sort of like renting a garage, to park
your car- only, in most cases, this is
FREE!)
Now, you have an ACCOUNT,
and a PASSWORD. You will need these to TRANSLOAD.
Click on THIS link, and hit
"SAVE". Save it in your "FAVS" folder, then add
it to your "F-Key" List. That will make it easy
to go to when you find an image you want to
TRANSLOAD!
TRANSCRIBE (FOR WEBTV-EASIEST FOR BEGINNERS!)
OK! Now, you have an
account, with storage space, & you have assigned
"TranScribe" it's own F-
key!
STEP TWO: Find an image that you like. Click on it to view
it. Hit the F- key that you have assigned to
"TranScribe". You will automatically go to that
page. Scroll down, & you will see the URL
(address) of the image printed in the box. Click
down onto the "Extract" button.
STEP THREE: You will then see
a lot of technical stuff. Ignore it, & scroll
down. You should see a copy of the picture that
you want. At this point, you will have TWO
options:
You can directly Copy the image
to your WebTV Scrapbook, by clicking on the
appropriate link, OR you can Click on the "T"
link, & upload the picture to your other
server. Then, the image becomes yours- you can
even re-name it! If your name is "Bob", for
example, you can re-name the image as
"Bobsgif.gif", or whatever you like! If you copy
the image to Scrapbook, it can only be used on
pages made with WebTV PageBuilder- it belongs to
WebTV.OR, DOES IT?
:-)
STEP FOUR: When you
click on the "T" link, you will be transported
to the TRANSLOADER. Fill in the boxes that have
an "R" after them. The others are optional, these are required. Just your FTP
(For
example, ftp.geocities.com)
Your user name
(The name that you
registered with- for example,
"Bob")
& Your
password
(Whatever you registered with-for example, "Yum-Yum")
DON'T WORRY ABOUT
THE "OTHER" BOXES! THESE ARE THE ONLY ONES YOU
NEED TO FILL IN! THE OTHER ONES ARE FOR MORE
"ADVANCED" USERS! OK?
:-)
Your Boxes should be
filled in like this example:
FTP PROVIDER: ftp.geocities.com
USER NAME:
Bob
PASSWORD:
Yum-Yum
RENAME TO:
Bobsgif.gif
Then, just hit
"Transload".
You will be transported to a
blue screen, which will tell you what is going on with your session. Hit the "Reload" link on the
page, as instructed, and scroll down to see
what's going on. You will see a lot of technical
stuff- don't worry about it- unless it says
"Failed" or "Aborted".
If all goes well,
you will see a "Zap" button, at the bottom of the page, & a message that the file was "Saved as
Whatever.gif"
If the Transload was
successful, go to your Homepage providers sign in page, sign in, & check your files. The image
should be there! Click on it to view, & hit
"Info". The NEW URL should look something like
this:
http://YourHomepageprovidersName/You
rDirectoryName/WhateverYouNamedTheFile.gif
NOW, it is on YOUR server! You can put it
wherever you like, & you will not be "Stealing"
someone else's Bandwidth! (Sort of like tapping
in on someone's electric- not very
nice!)
It may take you a couple of tries,
but once you get the hang of it, it's
easy!
