Dr. KEITH LOWE JAMAICA/CHINA/PANAMA 1854-2015 January 18, 2015 We thank our speaker, Dr. Keith Delroy Lowe for a very informative presentation in front of more than 50 people. Dr. Lowe was born in Jamaican into a Hakka Chinese family. His university education was in the United States, with a B.A. from Harvard and Ph.D. from Stanford. In 2000, he co-founded the quadrennial Toronto Hakka Conference, which will convene for the fifth time in July 2016. He is a long-time and very respected member of TCCFA. DINNER WITH THE HONG'AN DELEGATION The TCCFA Board of Directors welcomed a delegation from Hong'an County at the Taste of China restaurant on Saturday, December 13. The delegation had arrived from California where they signed an agreement in Yorba Linda California, Richard Nixon's birthplace. Hong'an County itself is the birthplace of Li Xiannian, president of China from 1983 to 1988. He was a key economic advisor following the Cultural Revolution. It is also the birthplace of his daughter, Li Xiaolin, president of Youxie. Dr John Hagen, Surgery in China October 19, 2014 We thank everyone who came out for Doctor Hagen's talk about his experiences during three visits to China, and what he observed of the state of surgery in China. The talk at the University of Toronto Medical Sciences Building included a slide-show of photographs from the trips. We thanks Li Na of China Daily for the photos! TCCFA members and guests enjoyed an 11 course meal which included Peking Duck and lobster. THE FORBIDDEN CITY: Inside the Court of Chinese Emperors April 6, 2014 We thank everyone who came out to the Royal Ontario Museum for a private tour of the Forbidden City Exhibition. These items come to us from Beijing's Palace Museum, more familiarly known as the Forbidden City where many are on display in a gallery just before the northern exit from the Forbidden City. Professor Bruce Parsons: Changes Reshaping Chinese Art: 1986-2013 February 23, 2014 Bruce Parsons spoke about his experiences teaching at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, one of the leading Fine Arts schools in China, about the changes in Visual Arts in China over the years since the Cultural Revolution, and about leading artists and their work. NEW YEAR'S HOTPOT DINNER January 27, 2014 We thank everyone who came out to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Horse at the Lucky Season Restaurant. Guests enjoyed a hotpot dinner where side dishes are cooked in a variety of soups and enjoyed with sauces. AN AFTERNOON WITH AUTHOR BAMBI NANCY SHEN November 17, 2013 We thank those who joined us on Sunday, November 17 and braved the Santa Parade crowds as we presented Bambi Nancy Shen, author of The Uncrushable Rose, a moving and heart-rending memoir—the story of a girl born in 1939 to a Chinese diplomat in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam. A PEARL ON THE RIDGE OF THE WORLD March 17, 2013 Perching with grace and majesty on Red Mountain in Lhasa, Tibet at an altitude of 3,700 meters, the Potala Palace is the highest palace in the world. More than a prominent landmark, the Palace complex is the icon of religion and politics for Tibet, the heritage of history and culture for China, and the pride of architecture and craftsmanship for the world. Known as “a pearl on the ridge of the world”, Potala Palace has been inscribed as a world heritage site since 1994 by the World Heritage Centre, UNESCO. From materials of the World Heritage Centre, UNESCO, supplemented by those of other sources and embellished with stories on major players connected to the Potala Palace, Deanna Yeung, the edu-tainer, presented a talk that was both educational and entertaining. Those who attended the presentation also enjoyed tea and refreshments along with a chance to win one of two copies of the book 'Monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism in China'. Monday, February 5, 2013 To celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Snake, the Federation hosted a delicious feast and movie at the Sky Dragon Restaurant. We thank all who came out for our celebration as it was a very festive evening of food, donor prizes and a famous Chinese movie. This year we presented the classic movie "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress". We hope to see you at next year's celebration! It is about the development of the Chinese community as told through first-hand stories, historical accounts, archival and present-day photographs, newspaper and magazine reports and excerpts from literary works that describe Toronto’s Chinese community yesterday and today. CHINESE NEW YEAR BANQUET Tuesday, January 31, 2012 Thanks to all who came out and helped usher in the Year of the Dragon at the Sky Dragon Restaurant in downtown Toronto. A delicious many-course meal was followed by a viewing of the epic film 'The Soong Sisters'. Congratulations also goes out to the lucky ones who won door prizes! CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING VIDEO Sunday, May 1, 2011 ANNUAL JIAOZI PARTY Saturday, January 29, 2011 TCCFA celebrated the Chinese New Year with its traditional event of dining on jiaozi dumplings followed by a square dance with Aaron Goodman making his debut as caller. Thanks to all those who came out to help make the dumplings and to those who taught newcomers how to fold the pasta shells properly! Thanks to Paul Yi also for his work manning the stoves and to Mr. Goodman for his wonderful calling of the square dance. PROFESSOR BERNIE FROLIC Sunday, November 28, 2010 This Fall, the TCCFA is marking the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and China. For our November meeting, Bernie Frolic, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at York University, spoke about Canada-China relations over the last four decades. He xplored a great number of areas and also entertained questions from the audience. We thank him for his presentation and we thank those who attended. TRAVELS TO CHINA Sunday, October 24, 2010 Harry Lee, Marlene Ritchie and Jack Li gave stirring and informative accounts of their recent travels to China. Harry's journey included an extensive stay in Shanghai where he gave an account of the World Expo and his own impression of the exhibits. Marlene was a part of a Friendship Delegation which toured various cities of China including Shanghai and Beijing. Jack is a dentist who often goes to China to share his expertise with his counterparts overseas. HOSTING A DELEGATION FROM CHINA Tuesday, August 31, 2010 Board members of the Federation welcomed delegates from the Zhejiang People's Association For Friendship With Foreign Countries (ZPPAFFC) on Tuesday, August 31. The delegates were treated to a tour of Niagara Falls as well as a banquet dinner with Federation members and community leaders back in Toronto. We thank all who were involved in this successful event, forging new bonds between Canada and China. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ During our visit in Canada, through your connections, we have met and held talks with non-government organizations like Toronto Canada-China Friendship Association, made many new friends, and explored the possibilities of establishing long-term cooperation and reached consensus on a variety of issues. We are in full conviction that, this visit will further promote the communication and cooperation between Zhejiang and Canada and deepen friendship between the two peoples, and will ultimately contribute substantially to the communication and cooperation in various fields such as culture, education, education and so on. PEKING DUCK GOURMET DINNER Wednesday, March 11, 2009 Peking Duck, or Peking Roast Duck, is a famous duck dish from Beijing that has been prepared since the imperial era. It is considered one of China's national foods. Thanks to all of those who attended a wonderful dinner at Asian Legend Restaurant. JIAO-ZI PARTY AND SQUARE DANCE Saturday, February 7, 2009 The Year of the Ox was ushered in by the TCCFA with its traditional celebration involving a jiao-zi dinner followed by an evening of square dancing. Thanks to all those who helped out with the preparation of the dumplings and a sincere thank-you to Ma Peng (in the red cap) who supervised the cooking of the jiao-zi. Thanks also to Grant Logan, a veteran square-dance caller who ensured that everything went smoothly on the dance floor! Hope to see everyone next year.
