Club Overview

The SRJC Library Club is essentially a service club installed to assist the College's Library officer and assistant in the day-to-day running of the College Library. Hence, club activities are primarily student-centered. These range from book selection, cataloguing and processing to counter and shelving duties, membership recruitment, training workshops to the annual Library investiture.

The Librarians Creed

"We, the 10th Batch of Student Librarians of the Serangoon Junior College Library, pledge as of now and hereafter, to serve the Library and the Serangoon Junior College Student Body to the utmost of our ability, carrying out our duties with impartiality and maintaining a proper code of conduct which will neither tarnish the name of the Library nor the College, thereby making the library a more conducive center for learning."

Club Organisation

The Club is headed by Teacher Librarians and lead by a group of students called the Executive Committee. The rest of the student Librarians are divided into eight departments, namely:

The English Collection Department;
The Chinese Collection Department;
The Malay Collection Department;
The Tamil Collection Department
The Editorial Department;
The Media Resource Department;
The Promotional Department; and
The Welfare Department.

These departments are each headed by an Ex-Co member, and they in turn led by the top four holding the posts of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Take a look at our Family Tree to see the organisation of the Library Club, presented to you in pictorial form, along with the names of all current year members. (The current year's JC1s are not included in the list as they are not yet officially recruited).

The Executive Committee

As the name suggests, the main function of the committee is to "get things done" They are the people who manage the Club, bring the Library to life, and (after much lost sleep and cups of coffee) set up this Homepage, among other roles.

Club Members

Contrary to popular belief, our Library Club members are a fun-loving lot. And if you can just observe a little more, you'll realize that if there are any noise made by anybody, it will be none other then the Librarians. And the people who make the most noise are of course the Ex-Cos! The Work Room is where we do our most work and also have our most fun!

While the perception that Library work is boring do have its validity sometimes, it is often the Librarians themselves who liven things up.

For example, counter work can be made more interesting (and beneficial) by observing which books are being borrowed and taking the trouble to look through returned books during free times. You may strike on a gold mine and discover the perfect book that you've been looking for for ages! This is especially likely during examination periods, where everyone seems to hogging and fighting for the "best" books available. And we, the Librarians, get a headstart!

Even during shelving, you can always take a break and pick up something interesting to read, like what Vignesh (foreground) and Lukman here are caught doing.

Club Activities

Apart from the day-to-day Library duties, other activities are organised to promote interaction among the Librarians beyond their respective department members. It is also a chance for the Ex-Cos to mingle and get to know the people whom they are leading.

Some of the regular activities held include the annual investiture cum farewell parties, Orientations, Christmas parties, Barbecues, Outings, etc.

Librarians along with members of other ECAs had been given an opportunity to go outdoors on 14 March this year to gain self-confidence and overcome personal inhibitions through a High Element Rope Confidence Course.

There was also a collection of old books for the Community Involvement Program with the People's Association Youth Movement. A stall was set up to collect old children's books, toys and stationary, which will then be sent to needy children in the rural areas of Indonesia.

This year will be an eventful one as we will be organising more activities on top of the usual ones. Library Week was a resounding success, our Library Seminar will be held in June, and our 10th Investiture was the grandest ever!
