Cuu.lasaccaka | Majjhima | Muulapa.n.naasa, Mahaayamaka Vagga | MN.035 | M.i.227ff. | 19/076 | debate | Saccaka goes about in Vesali saying that he is unrivalled in debate. He meets Assaji and after preliminary debate, goes with a large company of Licchavis to see the Buddha. The Buddha explains his method of training, issues of Self, the emptiness of Saccaka’s contentions. Saccaka refuses to acknowledge defeat until a yakkha (Vajirapani) threatens to smite him. Saccaka is driven to yield point after point until the sweat streams from his brow. The Buddha shows the assembled multitude how his own skin remains quite dry. In the end, Saccaka invites the Buddha and his disciples to a meal on the next day. Also enumerated are the three unsurpassable forms of mental state (anuttariya): 1. unsurpassed vision (dassanaanuttariya); 2. unsurpassed practice (pa.tipadaanuttariya), and; 3. unsurpassed liberation (vimuttaanuttariya) at M.i.235. |
