Mahaasaccaka Majjhima Muulapa.n.naasa, Mahaayamaka Vagga MN.036 M.i.237-51 19/108 self-mortification, enlightenment, Middle Way The Buddha recounts his early self-mortification -- and his conclusion that it could not lead to liberation. He describes how the Pañcavaggiyas deserted him in disgust but he persevered with meditation until attaining enlightenment.
