Assalaayana | Majjhima | Majjhimapa.n.naasa, Braahmana Vagga | MN.093 | M.ii.147ff., MA.ii.785 | 21/304 | equality, caste, virtue | Assalayana, a talented young brahmin tries to win the Buddha to his views in debate, saying the Buddha claims to belong to a higher caste. Buddha teaches that virtue alone leads to superiority and this can be cultivated by all castes equally. When Assalayana is defeated, Buddha cheers him with the story of Asita Devala who defeated brahmins of the same views. Assalayana takes refuge in the Buddha and builds a cetiya in his own dwelling for worship. |
