Udena explains that there are four sorts of recluses: 1. those who torture themselves; 2. those who torture others; 3. those who torture themselves and others; 4. those who torture neither themselves nor others. Of the four, the fourth alone can be called a righteous recluse. This final lives beyond craving, consummate, unfevered and blissful. They want none of the things after which men hanker, but renounce them all to go forth into homelessness. Ghotamukha admits that such are Righteous Recluses. The sermon comes at a time after the Parinibbana of the Buddha. |
