I really liked this joint, a very cool venue which had the benefit of a nice breeze, with the cozy feeling of a mid-sized club. The show started at around 8:15/30 and went to about 11:45. The band clearly wanted to keep playing, but they had clearly out stayed their welcome with the organizers who were worried about some curfew (never heard of this in NYC before!) The All-Stars came out smokin' and never really stopped all night- they sounded as tight as I have heard them play in the last several years. The crowd was extremely funky and kept GC and the boys happy all night with our loud responses to the chants. I think they would've played for a while longer (at least an hour more) if they didn't have to go. I was told that they had to finish at 11, so I think they played late as it was. I usually like to write up the highlights, but the whole show was basically a highlight. All the grooves and transitions were extremely tight and sounded great. George was happy as hell all night, and as I said the crowd was great. My only complaint is that it could have lasted longer. A few interesting tid-bits though... Micheal Hampton was not around, so Blackbyrd played Maggot Brain. He filled in very nicely, I thought it sounded great... but I think I would rather see Kidd Funkadelic up there playing that tune. Anyone know what he's doing? That would be a real big loss for the band. Humpty came on stage right after Greg Thomas' scat section in Knee Deep. He had one of the biggest afros I have ever seen, and he was fucked up as hell. After he introduced himself, he announced that he was "fucked up on acid, and its my first time at a P-Funk show" He also mentioned something about some crazy visuals, and that this was like a dream come true for him. He came out with a smooth rap that I didn't know- went on for a few minutes and left the stage after giving George a real big hug. Definitely a nice surprise Shonda's tune "Some stank and I want some" was great. She got really into it, and George had to grab the mike from her, and change the tune over to Underground Angel b/c she was getting so carried away. She smoked a big fat joint on stage with Clip during the tune. The crowd was definitely into the tune... some smell like a skunk and I want some... Where the hell is Garry? He's been missing at the last 2 shows I've seen. I love Garry and he obviously adds a ton to the band, I hope this isn't anything even semi-temporary. I have to give these guys a ton of credit, they're easily the best live band I've ever seen. They flew in from France on some ridiculous 10-12 hour flight that morning, they were missing their lead guitarist and #2 singer, and the show was still GREAT. I'm into the new additions to the setlist, namely Bop Gun and Gamin On Ya. I was a little disappointed they didn't have time for Ain't Nuthin but a Jam Y'all, and they didn't play Funkentelechy which is also back in the rotation according to Melissa's website..I like the arrangement of Flashlight they've been playing for a while now- with the long horn solos. Also into the Knee Deep with Greg Thomas Scat and then Sentimental Journey with Belita. Standing on The Verge of Gettin it On was excellent as well, I was under the influence of a few things so I'm having trouble remembering exactly how it went, but Standing on the Verge went into Bustin Loose and Bootsy's Wind me Up riff (and chant) and then back into Verge. I'm sure there were a few more tunes that came in and out as well, I just can;t place them all exactly as they were played. It was all so tight and seamless, man they sounded good! Anyway, I really looking forward to the July 25th shows at the Apollo in Harlem. Hope to see many of you there.
