George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars

Review 07/19/98 From: Case

Hello-- yes I caught the P-Funk in Baltimore on Sunday (7/19) at the pavillion known as Pier Six. Tickets were $27 seats - $22 ground. I'm in for $10 bucks with a ticket from a "scalper" out front and happy. For those of you not from the DC/Balt area, Pier Six is an outdoor covered setting in B-more's Inner Harbor. A great place to take in a show. You can see the harbor lights, the city skyline and a lot folks roll up in boats for a freebie on the water. Folks without cash can check out the shows from the next pier over. They hear for free and see the performers depending on where they are on stage. Been there.... Home Court Advantage-- P-Funk always kicks in Baltimore. A whole bunch of the fellas are from Baltimore. Geroge always makes a big deal about this. Most notably SKEET and the Horns!!! SKEET was absolutely dominate. Bottom was kickin thoughout. I counted 15 band members early on, including one guy who just smoked a cigarette while on stage. Missing All-stars--Gary, Boot, B. Woo (will they ever hook up again?), Blackbyrd (except for like the first two songs). This was a great show and I though Mike Hampton was incredible. Is there a better lead player in the world. Due to Blackbyrd's early departure Mike was able to shine. Maggot Brain (w/ Lige) and his One Nation solo were mind-boggling.. Interestingly, this was the second show of the day. They played the funk festival outside of DC Sunday afternoon. Yet and still they manage to funk the harbor for about 3hr 20min. They cranked on this one. Again Skeets and Kidd Funkadelic were the stars..oh and George was George, in charge and movin' the crowd. Set List (close but not exact) 1. Funkentelechy 2. Gamin' on Ya 3. 'Move Your Sexy Body' 4. Make My Funk the P.Funk 5. Up for the Down Stroke 6. If Anybody Gets Funked Up 7. Flashlight (a white guy comes on stage and does sax solo-decent) 8. Knee Deep 9. 'Let Me See You Raise Your Hand' 10. Somethin' Smells (and I Want Some) 11. Daddy's Little Angel 12. ?? Belinda and Skeet together 13. CIAIO 14. Everybody Got a Thang 15. Maggot Brain (my favorite-----MIKE HAMPTON) 16. Alice in My Fantasy 17. Cosmic Slop 18. One Nation 19. ? I admit, no clue 20. Booty song (without Louie guy) 21. Atomic Dog ( the last great song of the Golden Era of Funk) 22. ? rap song with unidentified rapper---by now there are at least 40 people on the stage including one sister who just felt that it was necessary to pull up her skirt, bend over and show half of Baltimore all of her ass, but all in the flow. I guess she couldn't help it -- cause it was funky up in there. What you gonna do, whatever it takes, what ever the party call for... ****encore**** 23 Red Hot Mama Back to reality...later, Case
