George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars
Review 07/21/98 From: Dr.Brookenstein
At the Westbury Music Fair in Westbury, Long Island I rode with a friend to see George Clinton and the P-Funk Allstars play in Westbury, New York (which is located on Long Island). The venue looked spectacular, with an "inner" stage that actually rotates. My friend and I were sitting near the edge of the stage....damn, those seats were excellent! I haven't been so close to the "P" since....I don't know when!! Before the show started, I spotted Skeet onstage and I said "Hi!" to him....I forgot to ask him about the picture he tried to send me via the Internet. Anyway, the "P" dropped at 8:15am, funking the crowd with funkatized version of "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)" and "Funkentelechy". Sir Nose came out 5 minutes after the start of the show to toy with members of the audience, including me and my friend. I shook hands with him! George Clinton appeared about 10 minutes afterwards, walking down the same aisle that my friend and I walked down! He started dancing with some beautiful woman sitting a few rows back! The song set listing: P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up) Funkentelechy (w/ "Quickie"and "Chug-A-Lug (The Bun Patrol)") Tear The Roof Off The Sucka (w/ "I Got a Thang, You Got a Thang, Everybody's Got a Thang", "Wind Me Up" chant, "Get Off Your Ass and Jam", "Psychoticbumpschool" music) Up For The Down Stroke (w/ "Cookie Jar", "Pinocchio Theory", "If Anybody Gets Funked Up", "All Sons of Bitches", "Unfunky UFO") Big Bang Theory (with Skeet's jamming bass solo) Aqua Boogie Party Up in Here (w/ "All Around The World For The Funk" chant) Flashlight (Not Just) Knee Deep Sentimental Journey Somethin' Stinks and I Want Some Underground Angel Treylewd's rap U. S. Customs Coast Guard Dope Dog Hard To Let Go (Belita's tune) Maggot Brain Atomic Dog Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow / Hall of Fame riff (w/ "I Call My Baby Pussycat") Radio-Friendly DJs Spin For The Funk Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow HIGHLIGHTS: Treylewd's rap was the same twisted rap that he performed in Brooklyn the night before. One thing I noticed about Treylewd (since I was a lot closer to the band members): THE BROTHER GAINED A LOT OF WEIGHT!! Damn! I saw him up-close in Philly about a year and a half ago, and this guy was skinny! "Atomic Dog" sounded better than ever......Kidd Funkadelic was seriously giving up the funk in Westbury!!!!! YEAH!! Billy Bass shined with his contribution on "I Call My Baby Pussycat" during the Hall of Fame riff. Skeet was kicking serious ass on the bass during "The Big Bang Theory".....WHEW!!! Boogie Mosson played the shit out of the classic "Knee Deep".....and Lige was "air-guitaring" his every move!!!! By the way, Boogie snuck over to Razorsharp's keyboard and played a little melody during "Somethin' Stinks and I Want Some"!!! And I didn't know that Greg Thomas played keyboards!! SOME MEMORABLE STUFF!!! Paul Hill is good at riling up the crowd! Plus, when he saw my flashlight shining, he reached out to grab it and I reached up to hand it to him (just to see what he would do), just to see him to pull his hand back! HA! I was able to shake hands with Robert "P-Nut" Johnson during the middle of Belita's song "Hard To Let Go". Also, I shook hands with Billy Bass and told him that I was a dedicated Funkadelic groupie! (Hmmm...a "groupie"??) I ran into Razorsharp, who was leaving the stage, and I told him that he was great! I was talking to Boogie (a very cool dude) about the length of their shows; I mentioned that they were too short!! I think the only response I got was "man, I'm tired as hell!!" I told Kidd Funkadelic (Mike Hampton) that his new CD is da bomb!!! Steve Boyd was missing from this show!! TOO BAD! The P-Funk show ended at 11:00pm......2 hours and 45 minutes of P-Funk!!! SHORT by the normal P-Funk standard, but very good!!
