George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars
Review 08/20/98 From: Dr.Brookenstein
At the Robin Hood Dell East in Philadelphia, PA (along with Starr Cullars & The Enterprise) Thanks to my connection to Starr Cullars, I was invited to join Starr Cullars & Enterprise backstage......in their dressing room!! I arrived at 4:20pm and was led backstage by a member of the funk-rock group. I was talking to Lige Curry about this new bass guitar that he just received. Lige showed it to me and it was a beauty (considerably heavier than the other basses he uses).....I took photos of him holding the bass. I was chillin' with the band members who were smoking some "chronic"....I didn't take a puff though! Lige and the fellas were going over some business stuff & some light conversation. I hanged out with the group for about 3 hours, eating some KFC chicken around 6:00pm. At 7:00pm, most of the P-Funk Allstars arrived! I was so fortunate to run into Garry Shider.....I just had to tell him that I love his singing voice (the man can blow!)!!! I also ran into Sir Nose, Treylewd, Clip, Frankie "Kash" Waddy, Skeet, Billy Bass, Blackbyrd, and P-Nut. Starr Cullars & Enterprise opened for the P-Funk Allstars around 8:15pm (but I missed SEEING the first 10 minutes of the show, due to some bullshit with the security folks backstage). The band opened up with the HOT "Red Alert", which led into the next tune "Stargazing". When I finally able to SEE the group, they were performing the funky "Seduce Me". Starr was getting down with her bad self!!! I was so glad that they were performing "Lady Loves Bottom", a tune written by Starr, George Clinton & Bootsy Collins. I saw only ten minutes of the show, because of some other bullshit about picture-taking in the audience area! The big shortcoming of this show, besides the security shit, was that Starr Cullars's group was only allowed to perform for 25 minutes......THAT'S IT!!! They were rushed off-stage at 8:40pm, after they just got onstage!! Before the P-Funk Allstars started their set, I took snapshots of Starr with some of her friends! I was still chilling in her dressing room when P-Funk started PERHAPS around 9:40pm. I walked with Starr's entourage back to the stage area to check out the "P"!!! P-Funk tore the place up with "Tear The Roof Off The Sucka" and "Up For The Down Stroke". Lige led the crowd with the chant "When I say P, you say Funk!" 'Do That Stuff" was the highlight of the show....they tore the shit out of that song! It was like the album version, but a lot better.......Garry's sweet voice funkatized the place. Then, it got really funky with the hard-rocking "Cosmic Slop"......GARRY CAN BLOW!! "Somethin' Stinks and I Want Some" was rapped by Treylewd.....Shonda wasn't there! (Also, Mike "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton wasn't there because he couldn't catch an early enough flight into Philadelphia.) Treylewd performed his little dirty rap afterwards. The house rocked with "Atomic Dog". The encore (11:32pm) was rockin' with some "Red Hot Momma from Louisiana.....stomping her way to Savannah.....she's been couped up too long!!" Actually, the first version was just a funky- ass instrumental. Then, the crowd was chanting "We Want The Funk, Give Up The Funk.....oh.....we need the funk, gotta have the funk!" Then, P-Funk jumped back into a smooth vocal version of the funky "Red Hot Momma".....the music was soft during the first verse, then it amplified during the chorus!! "Music For My Mother" was good, but "Hit It & Quit It" was the shit!! Funkier than 20 cans of wet Magic Shave!! "I Got a Thang" was the funking bluesy conclusion to their set!! As I was waiting for Starr, George Clinton walked close to me and I exclaimed, "George!!" He shook my hand, as he proceeded to the dressing room. This show was over at 11:45pm.
