George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars

Review 09/24/97 From: Chris

Hey all! P-Funk rolled into my town this past Wednesday (Huntington, WV 09/24/97), and I figured I'd let ya know what happened. First of all, me and some friends got to the coliseum around 2 PM just to see who we could meet. Who do we meet first? Mr. Gary Shider, one of the coolest, most down-to-Earth people I've ever met. We stood around outside the coliseum for SIX HOURS that day just hangin' around talkin' to people. The two dudes that spent the most time hangin' with us were Clip Payne and P-Nut Johnson. Clip is just cool. I can't think of any better way to put it. P-Nut talked to us for a solid half- hour. The stories that guy can tell are really amazing. Around 8 PM, George's limo finally pulls up. Gary signals for us to come up to the window. There, in all his glory, was Dr. Funkenstein himself. We got his autograph and then booked it to find our seats inside. The show was really amazing, but the band seemed disappointed by the size of the crowd. There were no costumes (other than Gary's diaper and George's usual look), no Mothership, and about 1/3 of the band was missing. Hmmm..... The show was really cool though! It was like seeing P-Funk in a small club. No special stage theatrics....just P-Funk wailing like no other. They played for a solid three hours, and probably would have gone longer but Huntington's curfew fucked us all over. The band broke into "Swing Down, Sweet Chariot" and the fuckin' house lights came on. I was really embarassed. Anyways, the band was tight....and if they ever come back (which is highly doubtful), I hope the city shows them much more respect. I'm out. --Chris
