George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars

Review 10/06/99 From: PFUNK53

I sat in Row E, Seat 112. That would mean I was in the front row, center stage, all the way on the left. For thirty four dollars I was treated to three hours of pure heaven. The music was really loud. So loud that my ears were ringing all night and most of the morning despite the fact that I had ear plugs in. I also had the extreme pleasure of singing with the Supreme Maggot Overlord when he jumped into the audience and stuck the microphone in my face. I left the show whistling Free Your Mind..... as I walked to my car. I can't begin to describe how great the show really was. Let me just say it was one of the Funk Mob's best shows. 1 Bop Gun - A nice way to kick things off. It really got the band warmed up and the audience grooving. 2 Gamin' On Ya - Some nice guitar work by Garry on this one. 3 The Undisco Kidd - (Move Your Sexy Body) Lots of audience participation. 4 Cosmic Slop - The P. Funk Guitar Army in full effect. George Comes on stage. 5 Red Hot - The guitars were turned down way low and we got to hear George & Garry sing the beginning of the song. It was an excellent move. The guitars were eventually cranked back up. 6 Tear The Roof Off The Sucker - George jumps into the front row and gets the audience involved. The song sounded great except when I sang. 7 Thumpasaurus - One of my favorite tunes. I love the way the All Stars tear this song up with the guitars. Don't get me wrong the Mob can play their asses of with this song, but the Woo Warriors have this song down to perfection. 8 Sumpin' Stanks - Shonda Clinton rapping to the music of Undercover Angel. People in the front row light up. 9 Dope Dog - George recites the deal on dope. Clip explains it all in the background 10 Maggot Brain - Kidd Funkadelic is MIA. He finally arrives and blasts us all. After the show Mike tells us that he was better years ago. I couldn't disagree more. Mike is getting better with age. This rendition of Maggot Brain may not have been as good as the one performed at the Hammerstein on New Years Eve 97/98, but it was close. The rendition on New Years Eve was flawless. I still get goosebumps just thinking about it. 10a & 10b Mike finishes up with a way too short medley of No Head No Back Stage Pass and Alice In My Fantasies. I miss the way all the old shows used to start with Alice. That really used to get us and the band cranked up. 11 Dog Star - No fuss. No muss. The all business team of Lige, Blackbyrd, Billy Bass & Ron Wright assult our earholes for about twenty minutes. 12 One Nation - Everybody on stage for the 'our' National Anthem. It sounded better than usual. 13 Flashlight - I am usually one of the first ones to criticize this song as it is performed live. In my opinion it has sounded quite tired and boring the past few years. Tonight it was different. I can't say whether or not the tempo was picked up or the audience energized the band. Flashlight has not sounded this good to me since the Anti Tour. 14 Knee Deep - The ultimate fan participation song. This is the point where I tend to lose my voice. It was stretched out just long enough to allow Kidd Funkadelic to do his thang. 15 Atomic Dog - Incredible amount of bottom on this song. Sir Nose invites some very nice young lovelies to bump and grind with him. An even not so young, but still lovely, jumps on stage to do the 'Dog'. 16 The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Guitar Riff - This is by far the best ten to fifteen minutes of live music anywhere, anytime. This is the song that gets me jumping, freaking, and convulsing. Sorry if I bumped you. I just can't help myself. This particular version was too short. I know this has been the last song for quite sometime now. Maybe they should think about starting this up fifteen minutes before curfew, instead of at the curfew, and hoping that they don't pull the plug. This song is the perfect combination of three songs. Free Your Mind, Music For My Mother & I Can't Get Next To You by The Temptations. Whoever thought about putting these three songs in a P. Funk blender is a genius. 17 Radio Friendly DJ's - Last little song before the lights came up. Final Thoughts & Comments - Belita's coat and hat were wild. Razor should smile once & while. Please don't let P Nut try and do those Sir Nose Flips. He might get hurt. Be nice to Boogie and lower the mic when he wants to sing. It's not nice to raise it on purpose when he comes over. Clip needs to start writing his sayings on paper again, then throw them into the audience. We Funkateers need some cheap souvenirs too. Sir Nose needs to eat a hamburger. I don't think he as any cholesterol. Where did George find those old Michigan high tops. I mean Chris Webber was still calling time outs in High School when those things were in fashion. If you need to pick up Lige's cd or Clip's cd you can get them at the shows. Take care and Funk On
