George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars
Review 12/06/96 From: Nick Jordan
[Brixton Academy, London, UK] No Gary Shider, Mudbone, Skeet, Belita Woods, Cordell, No Horns; instead what we got was a stripped down dirty Funkadelic sound working through the big crowd pleaser numbers plus a few surprises. It opened with a laid back P-Funk Wants To get Funked Up, Steve Boyd leading the chant. George then appeared saying "Dr Funkenstein here..." he strolled on stage swaddled in a white robe. The crowd went wild and the band lurched into Give Up The Funk before screaming into Hit It/Quit It, with Gearge reamplifying Billy Bass and Blackbird with his own mic. Next came Flashlight. Amp Fiddler warping sound loops over our heads. Greg Thomas, Sheila Brody, and P-Nut had by now joined the party. George slow talked Rhythm & Rhyme over Maggot Brain intro, Michael Hampton broke a string (again?!) on the first note, ran off stage for another guitar, started and there was no stopping him until Blackbird exploded into Dogstar (Fly On). Chaka Khan appeared during One Nation. George dragged her out of the wings. She still had her handbag with her and was clearly only there to watch the show. George offered her his mic but she just hugged him instead. George then dragged another woman out and intorduced her as Chaka's sister. This was all very funny and the crowd were loving it. A brief interlude as george sang Underground Angel with his Grandaughter before playing around Hard As Steel, building it up and then down to a slow Dope Dogs/Pepe the Pill Popper and bursting into Knee Deep. George was very funny doing some scat singing on this one before Steve Boyd took over. On and on it went through Atomic Dog, Some Next Shit, Martial Law (with the turgid Babblin Kabbabie, who popped up and thankfully popped down again). By now the groove was deep. Someone chopped the chords to Red Hot Mama and it was a full on OG Funkadelic assault from here on in to the end, with George Screaming and P-Nut running all over the stage. The jam pumping through You And Your Folks, Free Your Mind, Music for Your Mother, as one by one they left the stage. Stars on the night were Billy Bass for being so cool, Amp Fiddler for subtle sounds, and George for working hard as steel for nearly four hours. A few frustrations being some of the same songs as last UK visit three years ago, hardly any Parliament (No Horns!) and not enough of the underestimated TAPOAFOM (actually performing two of the weekest numbers). But it was a great party atmosphere. very mixed crowd, all ages all races seeking that which is good for our earholes. Nick Jordan
