Starr Cullars & the Enterprise
Review 05/22/99 From: Dr.Brookenstein
At the North Star Bar, Philly [$6] First, I would like to give a shout-out to a woman who brightened my day. I met this woman who works at Rite-Aid (in the photo lab department) in downtown Philly. When I dropped off my roll of film from the Starr Cullars concert, she began reciting part of George's opening rap to "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)"......I guess she saw the Bootsy T-shirt that I was wearing and that prompted the recitation!! It was so funky & hilarious!! She calls herself "Dee" and she's a big P-Funk fan. Consequently, I gave her one of my Internet business cards. When I returned to get the photos, she recited the entire opening rap, with me chiming in a couple of times!! Concerning the show, Starr Cullars & The Enterprise started their first set at 11:05pm. The song set listing was basically the same as all the other shows, with the addition of Tina Turner's classic hit, "Simply The Best". The closing number, "Soul Mate", was simply irresistible. The difference between this show and the others were the improved vocal stylings of Starr Cullars....she sounded like she was definitely more into the songs. Also, the moderate use of echo on her vocals was a really nice touch!! Her outfits are always fly....they are so radiant like the "starr" she is supposed to be! Lige Curry is definitely moving up on the list of best guitarists......Lige played with so much raw power and used a Hendrix (Jimi Hendrix) technique of creating those spaced-out, dynamic sound effects with the treble bar on his guitar!! The first set ended at 12:10am. The song set listing: Alice in My Fantasies Red Alert Starrgazing Seduce Me Darling Does He Really? Simply The Best Soul Mate The second set of the "Starr Cullars experience" began with a funky backdrop called "Let's Take It To The Stage", with Lige singing the chorus and chants of "Make My Funk To Starr-Funk", "Rhythm & Rock, Rhythm & Rock, Rhythm & Mutha-funkin' Rock", and "Starr Cullars!" The chorus of "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)" was also chanted during this jam session. Every ass was shakin' to the Starr-Funk......PUT MORE "STARR" IN YOUR FUNK!!! FUNK FOR THE 21ST CENTURY!! INTERGALACTIC FUNK!! FUNK FROM A STARR ONE HUNDRED LIGHT-YEARS AWAY!! FUNK UPON A STARR!!! Shawn Hill performed an arousing, funkified drum solo, either during "Kosen Rufu" or "Blastin' Off" (I can't remember now!)!! People in the bar begged for an encore, so the band performed the song that was made especially for Starr, "Red Hot Momma"!! By the way, let me give a shout-out to Randy Waters, a member of the funk/ska/rock group, Gangster Pump, who was in the house this evening. The second set ended at 2:00am. The song set listing: Let's Take It To The Stage (w/ "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)") Kosen Rufu Blastin' Off Make It Happen Tonight ENCORE: Red Hot Momma
