A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste

On Monday, October 29, 2007, a Gates Millennium Scholarship Workshop was hosted at the Church of the Covenant. The dining room tables were full of high school students and their families, including students from the Saturday Tutoring Program and from the community. The event was publicized in the Call and Post, Sun Press, and elsewhere. The word about this event at Covenant really got out!

The Gates Millennium Scholarship is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and provides outstanding, low-income, minority students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate education in any discipline they choose. The workshop was led by Corttrell Kinney, who is a Saturday tutor, a graduate of John Hay High School and Morehouse College, a Case doctoral candidate, and a Gates Millennium Scholar.

The workshop included breakout sessions to help the students start the application process, which requires writing nine essays. They received a timeline that will help them finish the application by the January deadline. They discussed how to ask a teacher or counselor to nominate them, and how to choose another adult to fill out the recommendation forms. One of the highlights of the workshop was hearing the students describe the activities and awards they will be listing on their applications. They all had impressive stories to tell and will certainly continue to accomplish great things in the future.

Corttrell Kinney wrote,

"The Gates Millennium Scholarship Workshop at the Church of the Covenant was a success because volunteers cared enough to take time out of their busy schedules to help facilitate this program. I thank the Church of the Covenant for providing us with a fabulous venue to host this event. It was nice to have the Gates Workshop in the same space as the Saturday Tutoring Program. We are right here in the heart of the arts, culture, and learning mecca of University Circle and Case Western Reserve University. The students were well-informed and they left energized and ready to submit essays for review. I know that because of you many students in Cleveland will gain access to scholarship and educational opportunities, which is a great gift to receive."
