Saturday Tutoring Program to Partner with Junior League of Cleveland, Inc.

The Junior League of Cleveland HouseThe Saturday Tutoring Program was selected as one of the Junior League of Cleveland's Immediate Impact projects for the 2009-10 program year.

The Junior League of Cleveland, Inc. (JLC) is an organization of over 650 local women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

The tutoring program's first experience with the JLC was at the August 2007 University Circle volunteer fair hosted at the Church of the Covenant. One of the tutors staffing our tutoring program's table had a conversation with the woman staffing the JLC's table.

That could have been the end of the story, but during our 2008-09 tutor recruitment efforts, we contacted the JLC. They invited us to their September partnership breakfast, where we received an Immediate Impact application. Immediate Impact projects are part of the JLC's new method of forming collaborations with other local non-profit organizations.  By collaborating, the JLC seeks to start or advance projects that champion youth wellness, inside and out – the JLC's current project focus area.

In the coming year, the JLC will help the Saturday Tutoring Program in three areas: 1) tutoring students, 2) building contacts (to recruit other Greater Cleveland residents to be tutors and to identify field trip sites) and 3) helping us improve our publicity and marketing efforts.

We are excited about this partnership because our organizations seem like a perfect match.  The JLC's purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. Their League House is located minutes from the Church of the Covenant on Magnolia Drive in University Circle. JLC volunteers will be offering their expertise to strengthen our tutoring program, and they may acquire new skills through this experience. Furthermore, women who are currently volunteering as tutors may become interested in joining the JLC. The children as well as members of both organizations are sure to benefit.
