WINNER
The Beautiful Dogs of the Summer!

We selected two this quarter, since we made you wait so long! Harvey, for his selfless service to our fellow hoomans in assisted care facilities, and his lady friend Molly, for as we all know, behind any successful male, there is the calming and inspiring force of a woman.

Will the owner please send us their snail mail addy so we can send each of these lovely companions their Dogs of the Summer prizes (and let us know their favorite chew toy flavor please)...

           Harvey and Molly
                       Owner - Linda

Harvey (the bigger dog on the right, that is a Basset/Shepherd mix) and Molly aka known as Kangaroo (the little girl on the left), are two of the most precious dogs you will ever meet. Yes, I know you have probably heard this many times before, but Harvey is a 60 pound lap dog who loves everyone, and can't get enough attention.

I acquired Harvey about 3 years ago from the Animal Shelter here in Oregon. I can't believe someone actually gave him up, but I'm sure happy they did, as he has added so much happiness to so many people's lives. Not just personal friends but people in nursing homes where he has worked as a therapy dog in the Dove Lewis Veterinary Hospital Pet Assisted Therapy program here.

When I had to have my black lab put to sleep 8 months ago (Dakota) for fear aggression, I decided Harvey needed some company and I got Molly, who is Dachshund/Scotty Terrier from a woman who breeds them (yes, on purpose). Molly is also one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet and everywhere we go they both get nothing but compliments from inquisitive people wanting to know what breeds they are.

Together they make quite a pair and I hope you will consider them for dogs of the Summer.

And the Lovely Runners Up!

Once again we had a lovely assortment of canine beauties... here are the pageant runners up...

                                                                                Missy
                                                                                                       Owners - Virginia and Karen

Missy is a Schnauzer/Lhaso Apso cross. She came from a shelter at 8 weeks of age and is now 13 years old; and the boss in this house hold. She talks VERY MUCH with her eyes and bark. She has her own after dinner mints; and she has both of us trained very well.

            Keri
    Owners - Virginia and Karen

Keri is a West Highland Terrier we got from pet rescue 3 years ago. She was a badly abused dog. She had broken hips and very bad health. She was scared to death of men with basball hats and cowboy boots. As you can see she is truely loved and part of our family. She does have chronic bronchitis that is uncureable in a dog because there are so many things that causes bronchitis in a dog. We treat Keri's for the cough but that is about all we can do. The bronchitis cough is kind of like a smoker's cough. The bronchitis isn't a threat to her life, and the cough is pretty much controlled now. The Veterinarians guess Keri's age somewhere between 4 and 8 years old.

Muttley
Owner - Jan

This is Muttley and he's a true blue Mutt... hence the name. Although we do know for certain that he is part Corgi. In any case, he's a wonderful friend, extremely loyal, and very intelligent. He's loves people and I don't know what I would do without him.

Last year my father passed away, and as I am away at school "the Mutt-man" has been a great help to my Mom. He's truly a gift from God and a great comfort to all. I've never met a person that hasn't fallen in love with him at first sight. If his cute face doesn't grab you right away, his personality certainly will. He loves to play and although he's 7 years old now, he will always look and act like a puppy. Whether he's chosen for "Dog of the Summer" or not, I'm glad to have been able to show you what a great pet he has been for me.

Um... we have a question here... who's Muttley's little pal??

                 Sammy
               Owners - Kam & Morag

We are from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This picure is our dog Samson, who is one year old now. We really liked this pic and never thought of entering it in any sort of contest or anything like that. So, we hope the judges like it!

                             Sean
                                       Owner - crs

He's a german shepherd, collie and wolf mix.

           Weevil
              Owner - Lisa

This is my rat terrier, Weevil. I got him when he was eight weeks old---well, actually, he got me. I went to see a litter of pups, six males (three tri-colors, and three fawn and white). They were all fat and healthy and wiggly, and I just couldn't choose. Finally, I just stood up, and looked at the wriggling mass of puppies at my feet, and said, "Which one of you fellas is coming home with me?" Weevil jumped up and landed, splat, on my foot. Sold! He has been my constant companion ever since. He is the sweetest, most good natured dog I've ever met---always happy, always alert, and always by my side. Basically, 16 pounds of happiness, joy, and unconditional love in an attractive, furry package. What more could a girl ask for?

                                                                            Sled Dogs

This race was held just north of Flagstaff at Kendrick Mountain and our sled, led by dawg wrangler Donna, came in first in the 3 dog run.

Michael's buds

And some pals of our Spring winner, here is Joshua and his friend, also companions of Donna. They were just too handsome to leave off... even if they did arrive surrounded by chickens and other livestock we had to carefully edit away [grin].

Special Honorable Mention

We felt compelled to grant a special honorable mention to this entry. Spot has certainly earned his kudos based on his ease of care, barkless nature, perfect housetraining, and impeccable manners (even if he is a bit... slow moving... we couldn't get him to sit in the trials).

Since we were concerned a bit about his owners breeding others like themselves... the prize for this entry is a safe sex kit... [grin].. for the owners... if they would kindly send us their snail mail addy so we can send it their way before any... ah... further puppies show up...

            Spot
      Owners - Goof and Slyder

This is our dog and we are so proud of him, that we wanted to share him with you. He is so easy to take care of that we thought this would be the perfect dog for Jade.

He practically does everything for himself, you hardly even know he is around. If you would be interested in a dog like ours, just let us know and we could arrange it for you.

Commentary

Cattle Dogs and Deafness
by Cat

I was interested to read on your dog page that you consider australian cattle dogs mean!...wow...I've never heard that before (I hate to think how badly trained the ones were that helped you form this opinion). Heelers are gorgeous, clever, well-mannered and hard-working dogs that tend to prefer just one owner (handler). I had heelers for years and bred them for a while, and with the exception of one (who was very strong willed at a time when I was not!). I've never had a problem. I tend to think that the training is everything with a dog (as opposed to cats, who just are what they are, yes?) and cattle dogs are no exception.

Properly trained, they make fabulous pets who love LOTS of excercise and attention - perfect active family dogs! In fact, I had a deaf heeler who was just the most amazing dog. She would sneak inside and because she knew that I had to have eye contact to get her to do what I wanted her to do, she would hide her eyes under a chair and move them when I would move mine to get that contact! She was a darling!

Just one word of advice on this (I think a heeler would be a fabulous choice as a helper/companion dog) if and when you go to pick out a puppy, check its hearing by clapping loudly behind its head while watching for a response. I'm not sure if it's well-documented or is even a problem with the breed, but two of the pups I bred in different litters were deaf and the one I talk about above was also deaf. They're still wonderful little dogs, but oh! so damn hard to train effectively!

The Perfect Peekapoo
by Nxy

Grrrrreetingz Grrrrlfriends.

I'm compelled to write regarding "the perfect pet." I'm more of a 'cat' person but have co-owned several dogs over the years thanks to room-mates & lovers.

These things I've learned...

THE PERFECT DOG: Peekapoo

Yes, believe it or not! My wife adopted one when she was off work with a broken back. And YES, he's a YAPPY little dog. My reasons are:

  1. Pekinese dogs don't chew up EVERY piece of furniture etc. in your house because they CAN'T. (underbite ;)
  2. Poodles DO NOT SHED.
  3. They aren't hyperactive & looking for trouble ALL THE TIME.
  4. They're too short to get anything off of the counter. (Our Lab has a thing for bread. So if she can reach it, she'll eat the whole loaf.)

I think ANY pet that doesn't create more work for me is a perfect pet. Therefore, my wife's peekapoo will get my vote EVEN THOUGH I HATE yappy little dogs. The shedding thing bugs me about cats & dogs.

Probably more than you wanted to know. [grin]
