The Band
Over the Edge considers both Athens and Atlanta their hometowns. The
whole project began in the summer of 1999. Matt Megrue (vocalist/
songwriter) and Mark Sponsler (guitarist) formed a friendship in
Panama City and formed X Factor in the following weeks after returning
home to Atlanta. Back home, X Factor picked up Joey Megrue (drummer),
Matt's brother, and Michael Gorman (guitarist). In September of 1999
Michael left the band to pursue his college education. X Factor then
picked up a friend of Mark, and a former bandmate of Matt's from a
previous project, Eric Guenther (guitars). He helped to complete the
X Factor sound. At the close of October 1999 X Factor changed its'
name to Over the Edge to help bring a newness to their new lineup.
The band began collectively began writing songs to go on their self-
titled debut album. Acoustic-rock/pop songs such as "Carry Me Home"
and "Without You" tend to sway towards OtE's lighter side while
scorching tunes such as "French Nickel" and "Conform" rock with the
best of them. In the spring of 2000, after the song list for the
self-titled album had been completed, Over the Edge gained one more
member. Karl Broder (bassist) came in to take over on the bass guitar
letting Matt focus primarily on vocals and and extra guitar if need
be. The talent is indescribeable. Megrue's deep lyrics mixed with
Sponsler's solid rhythm, Guenther's shredding lead, Broder's funky
bass, and J. Megrue's tight beats on the drums make for a mind
blowing experience, especially live. It is through seeing Over the
Edge live in that the depth of their music and talent can be truly
appreciated. "Over the Edge" has done well among their loyal
following Over the Edge and the band's future looks very bright. Be
sure to pick up a copy of the band's new album (info available in the
CD section) and be sure to check out when OtE comes to your town (info
available in the Shows section).
