InterCon's free InterSLIP will get your SLIP connection going.
If you can use PPP, what works will vary. One of the best in the bunch is John Nagle's Simple PPP. It's a test release and doesn't yet work with Open Transport, but it is rock solid for MacTCP users.
If your Mac requires Open Transport, or your ISP doesn't quite follow the standards, you'll want to look at FreePPP. It's more flexible than Simple PPP and maybe a bit quicker, but you may find it conflicts with certain extensions and control panels. Either FreePPP will work extremely well for you, or it won't work at all.
If you have a really old Mac that can't run the above two PPP implementations, there's always the original MacPPP 2.0.1 from the Merit Network. It's ugly and clunky, but it works! MacPPP predates Open Transport, so you need to be using MacTCP.
As interest in WAIS seems to be declining, there's no point in recommending any tool other than this one. It's good at what it does, but most WAIS services today are being handled on the Web by many popular Browsers.
Download MacWAIS 1.29& VRML Browsers
Download the new Netscape 3.0. (Beta Version)This version is coming along nicely, and is definitely worth a look. Version 2 is very stable but lacks many "modern" features. Also from this link you can download platform versions.
You also might want Netscape Defrost, which fixes a nasty lockup problem in many Mac Netscape versions.
You can try out Microsoft's Internet Explorer too. It seems to be more solid and faster than Netscape, but it lacks support for frames and Java.
Of course, there's always NCSA Mosaic, the core of Microsoft's browser and originated by the same people who now run Netscape.
