Choosing the right breed

  1. How big do adults grow?

  2. How much do they eat?

  3. How much exercise do they need?

  4. How much work is involved in keeping their coat, nails and ears cleaned?

  5. What is the breed’s traditional function? (Even if a dog is no longer expected to do what his ancestors did, instincts remain an influence on his behavior.)

  6. Would you recommend these dogs for a family with small children? If not, why not?

  7. How playful are the likely to be? Are they reserved or outgoing?

  8. How much room do they need as a puppy? And as an adult?

  9. How much does the breed shed?

  10. What health problems are common to them?

You’ll have other questions specific to your family’s needs. Be sure to ask whatever you want to know.
