Introduction

The index of a nation's growth is the volume of its building activity. To ensure functional integrity effectively and economically, building construction of all categories demands the expertise of the architect for design, of the engineer for the safety, of the physicist for thermal comfort, of the quantity surveyor for verification of economy, of the manager for progressing project etc. It is not hard to imagine that the process of co-ordinating various specialties in a project is a colossal task. There is need for continuous communication to keep each independent task going at a predetermined pace without fouling others. Such a co-ordinator is thoroughly trained professional- a Building-Engineer and Manager. His attributes are many and he is trained as future captain of building industry.

Construction activity in any country is the materialisation of the strategies developed in the classrooms of its technical institutions. The school as one of its many academic responsibilities found it necessary to provide adequate, appropriate and systematized education at the right level of sophistication, in the field of building. The unique one and a half year course in the
Master's Degree in the Building Engineering and Management, thus established to met increasing demand, trains future project co-ordinator.
