THE COURSE

THE  MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMME FOR BUILDING ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT:

  1. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Basic Project Management formats; Time scheduling techniques; Work break down structures; Network technique for project planning, scheduling & control; Resource scheduling; Time cost analysis of building projects; Contract Management; Value engineering; Specifications and estimations for building projects; Organisational behaviour- motivation and communication of project personnel; Financial Management; Human resource managment; Project monitoring and cost control aspects of building projects. (This core subject is taught in all 3 semesters).
Case study of different types of on going building projects are taken up in the studio programme to get a full appraisal of the practical aspects of Project Management.

  1. CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY: Review of soil properties and soil explorations; Selection of foundation system for a building; Repair technologies; R.C.C., Precast and Prestressed concrete construction; Structural steel construction; Characteristics, performance and application of various Construction Equipmemts.
  1. STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS AND DESIGN PROCESS: Structural Requirements; Structural Systems for R. C. C. multi storeyed buildings; Large span structural systems; Structural analysis and Design of frame structures.
  1. ADVANCE MATERIAL SCIENCE: Overview of different construction materials like admixtures, adhesives, plastics, metals, glass, cementitious, bituminous and insulating materials; new materials and technologies developed by C.B.R.I. and C.P.W.D.
  1. BUILDING SERVICES: water supply and sanitation, Electrical, Air Conditioning and Ventilation, Fire Fighting & Detection, and Lifts; Co-ordination of various services in the building.
  1. FUNCTIONAL EFFIEIENCY OF BUILDINGS: Climate and site analysis, the Building Envelop, Pasive heating and cooling, Shading and sun control, Day lighting & Electrical lighting, Environmental control system, Active solar systems, Energy analysis and Noise control for various types of buildings.
  1. COMPUTER APPLICATIONS: Introduction to various computer environment in the analysis, Design and construction of building, Appreciation of data based Packages, Structural Design & Analysis Packages and Project Mannagement Packages as applicable to building projects.
  1. STATISTICS & OPERATION RESEARCH: Statistical methoda and techniques for collection, tabulation and presentation of data related to Building Engineering and management problems; Sampling techniques; Queing theory; Simulation; Linear programming; Inventory and replacement models.
  1. BUILDING LEGISLATION & PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE: Principal of Contracts & Agreement; Basic concept of Arbitration, Land Acquisition Act, Urban Land Ceiling Act and Property Act; Significance of Land Devepolment Control- Building Regulations and Bye-Laws; Professional Practice.
  1. ELECTIVE: Quality management, Real estate management, Low cost housing etc.
Special emphasis is laid on the studio programmes of the respective subjects which enables the students to experience the practical aspects in the building industry.

  1. PROJECT SEMINAR: In the second semester, the students prepare an authentic monograph on a chosen topic for delivery in class. The topics chosen are either field oriented in the relevant areas of the construction industry or academic research oriented in the areas of Building Engineering and Management.
  1. THESIS: In the final semester, the thesis provides an opportunity to the students to prepare an independent and original study of a project of their own choice- conceptual or practical, pertaining to Building Engineering and Management. This study offers them an opportunity to work in a real life environment and attempt fresh approach in the problem area.
