Clothing (vocab)

Indutus – put on, amictus – wrapped around
Subligaculum – pair of shorts / loin cloth
Bracae – riding breeches, for hunts or riding or for warmth in northern provinces
Nationes bracatae – nations who wore pants, barbarians
Tunica interior, tunica exterior – inner and outer tunics
Angusti clavi – with narrow stripe, knightĄ¯s tunic
Lati clavi – with wide stripe, senatorĄ¯s tunic
Toga praetexta – childĄ¯s toga
Sinus – fold, upper part of toga
Cinctus Gabinus – for sacrifices and certain official rites. Sinus drawn over head
Toga pura – plain toga, toga virilis, toga libera – free toga.
Toga candida – white toga, fullerĄ¯s chalk make toga bright white, candidates wore this
Toga picta – crimson embroidered in gold, wore by generals in triumphal processions
Toga pulla – mourning or threatened with calamity
Sordidati – shabby, those who wore the above
Mutare vestem – to change their dress, change from normal toga to plain toga or pulla
Lacerna – cloak first used by soldiers and lower classes, adopted because of convenience
Trabea, sagum – lacerna with heavier material, military cape
Paludamentum – worn by generals, purple with threads of gold
Paenula – dark heavy cloak protect against rain/cold
Synthesis – dinner costume, garment put on over tunic
Trabea (worn by augurs) – striped with scarlet and purple

Endromis – bathrobe, used by men after exercise
Soleae – sandals, calcei – shoes

Causia, petasus – foreign origin broad-brimmed felt hat

Stola – outer tunic, dress
Palla – shawl, wool, worn outdoors
Carbasus – cotton, Roman word for linen
Purpura – artificial color for clothing, purple
