Beckham - Sir Alex relationship: sorted

David Beckham's future at Manchester United was secured on Saturday night as manager Sir Alex Ferguson insisted: 'I don't hold grudges.'

Ferguson revealed that three weeks after their infamous training-ground bust-up a reconciliation has been reached between himself and his £25million superstar.

And Ferguson spoke at length for the first time about his sometimes strained relationship with the England midfielder. 'I have had a chat with David. All we can say about him now is that the matter is cleared. It's over,' said Ferguson.

'It was finished on the day it began. I hope David is now saying the same positive things about this situation. The players know I don't hold grudges. I haven't got the time to hold a grudge. I just want to get on with the game. That applies to all the players and David is no different from anyone else.

'In the course of a season we may have situations with players and they are dealt with internally. It's called control. I will make a decision and that's the matter over. It is never brought up again. It was the same with David. Now that's cleared, finished.'

Beckham felt Ferguson's wrath after he missed training to nurse infant son Brooklyn during an over-night illness. Beckham was dropped for the next day's Premiership game against Leeds United.

The conflict underlined Ferguson's concern over Beckham's showbiz lifestyle, the distractions of having his family home 200 miles from United's base camp and the social whirl surrounding his pop star wife, Victoria.

Last week a contrite Beckham reassured Ferguson that he is committed to United and does not want to leave the club where his high-profile career was shaped.

Inside the world's richest club, though, there remains significant caution about whether the Beckham circus can be controlled.
