A boy and his dog

I can still remember Danny-Boy, the smooth red dachshund my dad brought home to Georgia when he retired from the Navy in 1966. We still laugh about that first day with Danny-Boy. We were coming home from the Atlanta airport, and my oldest brother, Mr. Cool with the white denim pants, was holding Danny-Boy, and the puppy proceeded to pee all over him. In the photo above, I've got my attention on the TV, but Danny-Boy has his attention on my raisins.

We didn't have Danny-Boy all that long, and after him came a couple of smooth black-and-tans -- Heidi and Bob-Dog, who was the last family pet we had before I went off to college in 1979. This story picks up in 1990, after I had just moved to Florida for a new job and decided it was time for another dog in the house.
 That's when Ivan came along.

Well, I guess things haven't turned out too badly (OK, so I still spend a lot of time in front of the TV; at least there's still a dachshund by my side). I live in Plantation, Florida, near Fort Lauderdale, with three dachsies -- Hannah, Ivan and Willy. I volunteer with Almost Home Dachshund Rescue Society and am vice president on the board of directors with Florida Dachshund Rescue. If you are looking to adopt a pet. I can help with transport, process applications and do home checks. Click on the link below if you want to contact AHDRS or FLDR directly. Or, go back to the home page and find the links to a number of other dachshund rescue organizations.

If you're considering purchasing a dachshund (and even most rescue organizations charge a fee to cover their expenses), please do not buy one from a pet store. Most pet stores get their animals from brokers, who in turn get their animals from puppy mills -- large operations that are in business to make money. Instead, find a reputable breeder who will have followed well-established guidelines in an attempt to better the breed, not add to his or her bottom line. Finding a good breeder is not easy. You must do the research. The links below should help.
