Dachshunds and back injuries: Hannah's story

On March 23, 2004, Hannah suffered a ruptured disc in her back. She had surgery the same day. Thanks to a fine neurosurgeon and a little luck, she was well on her way to a complete recovery just a few weeks later.

Here is Hannah 2 days after surgery. She looked pitiful but could stand and take a few steps.

You can see the metal staples along her spine, 21 in all. They stayed in for about 10 days.

By April 7, the staples are out, but her pretty coat has a ways to go.

Here she is on June 24. The hair on her back is filling in. She looks and feels great!

Dachshunds as a breed are more susceptible than others to back injury and inverterbrate disc disease. Often this results in paralysis, as was the case with Hannah. Depending on the severity, this can be treated with crate rest, or medication, acupuncture or surgery. There are options, and these types of injuries and disease are not a death sentence. A fine support group, Dodgers List (Dachshund Orthopedic Disc Group Email Resource), can be found on the Internet. The group was inspired by a doxie named Dodger who was prematurely euthanized.
