Maria's Story Continued...5

I was often beaten for one thing or another I think the nuns aim was to break my spirit so that I would conform. My older sister was a good girl and she recalls she was to frightened to be anything else unlike me I had spirit and was often punished for daring to question things that the nuns did to me consequently resulting in another beating when I did dare to ask. Another thing the nuns used to do to me was nip me on my arms they would pull a small bit of skin and it did hurt and often bruised my arm also they used to drag me up and down the stairs pulling my hair I have very fine hair even today and boy did that hurt it was bloody painful. I suffered from a runny ear my right ear and it was never treated for years. When I developed a sore ear it was oozing a Yellow liquid but as time went on it was a Green liquid and it smelled but I recieved no treatment for it even today I cannot get water in my ear as it is very painful if I do.

At Nazareth House we had what was called visiting Sunday one Sunday in the month. My Dad used to come and visit us when ever he could and he always aimed to get visiting Sunday of work so that he could visit us but sometimes it was not possible. The visiting was held in this great huge room and at either end there was a pedastal with two nuns on each one so that they could watch everything that was going on. I hear you ask why did my sister and I not tell my Dad what was happening to us the honest answer to this is we were terrified to tell any one that is the level of fear we had. I recall one incident when my Dad came to visit us and my sister had been caned for something or other which was most unusal as she very rarely was caned as she was a good girl. After my sister was caned it will show you the force of the caning when I explain what happened to her hand. My sister's hand was bruised and numb and she found it very painful and could not move it much because of the pain. I recall my Dad asking her what she had done to her hand and she told him it did not matter and kept changing the subject eventually my Dad coaxed it out of her what had happened and when he found out went up to the nuns and my sister was terrified in case she was in trouble for telling him but they let that one escape my Dad was angry...
