Cliffside Structures on a Ledge Overlooking Reull Vallis

- back -

We are going to be examining the bottom MOC photograph in the Bend at Reull Vallis series.

Some promising areas for further study are circled in blue.

Trail into the Reull Vallis valley

First, the primary feature of this landscape is a steep cliff or bluff, roughly 460 meters (1500 feet) high.

Bearing in mind Mars's weaker gravity (3.72 m/s2, about 1/3 of Earth's), it would still be quite difficult to descend from the mesa to the valley floor in a land vehicle without a good trail or road.

The incline is too steep.

What we'd need is a gently-descending trail.

A suggested trail is marked with a dashed line.  Too bad the photo ends here; we'd like to see where this trail goes.

The dark areas below the cliff face might be mineral deposits, dark-colored sand, overhangs that are in shadow, or possibly even caves.  There's a lot more to see here.
