Speed Up ISP Logon Time (Windows 9x)On some systems it can take a long time to connect to the Internet, you can decrease the time required to connect to your ISP by trying these simple steps.

Open the Dial-Up Networking folder, right click on the icon for your ISP and select 'Properties'.

Chose the 'Server Types' tab, and then under Advanced Options uncheck the 'Log on to network' box, and make sure that 'Enabled Software Compression' is checked. From under Allowed Network Protocols uncheck 'NetBEUI' and 'IPX/SPX Compatible'.

Next time you connect to your ISP, the connection should be a little faster.

Please Please Do not do this if you have any doubt and if you do MAKE A BACK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This time I will expand on the internet connections speeds, mostly on TCP/IP settings and communication ports.
The first thing we are going to change is the TCP/IP settings. Go to your Windows 9x control panel and open Network Settings, in there look for your Dial-Up Adapter.

Click on properties and go to the tab named Advanced and change the option called "IP Packet Size", the value must be "Large"

Now click OK, but don't close the Network Settings windows yet. Now select the TCP/IP adapter for your Dial-Up Adapter and click in properties.

Now click OK, but don't close the Network Settings windows yet. Now select the TCP/IP adapter for your Dial-Up Adapter and click in properties.
In the TCP/IP properties windows look for the WINS Configuration tab and change the value to "Disable WINS Resolution"

Click OK and then OK again to close the Network Settings window, at this point the computer will ask you to reboot, DON'T DO IT, we will reboot later. Now go to START, RUN and type "regedit" and OK to open the Windows Registry editor. BACKUP BEFORE WORKING IN YOUR REGISTRY!
Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\COMBUFF
and change the "Start" value from 00 to 01.

In the same line of that key look for the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VCACHE
and change the "Start" value from 00 to 01.
Now look for your Dial-Up Adapter in your registry in the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Net\000?
the question mark means that your Dial-Up adapter could be 0, 1, 2, etc., depending on your network configuration, you will know you are in the right key when you see that in the name section is written "DriverDesc" and the value is "Dial-Up Adapter", now, after you have identified which one is your Dial-Up Adapter look for the name section "SLOWNET" and change its value from 01 to 00.

After changing this setting close your registry and restart Windows, your new speed will be noticed right form the start of the Internet. Previous to this settings my maximum download speed was 4.5 kb/s in my V90 ISA modem, now is 5.6 kb/s, a small jump but a worthy one!
Beside download speeds you will also notice that your "pings" will be lower, and that's a + for Internet Gamers.
