Ashikos

Ashiko Drums My standard ashikos are built of 4-ply pine wood in stave-style construction. The shells are not turned on a lathe. They are planed down by hand rounded off with a disc sander, fine sanded and then coated with polyurethane finish. A goat-skin head ( unless otherwise specified ) is then laced down, using steel rings wrapped in cloth, and low-stretch polyester rope, in the "Mali-weave" style of lacing. I also use other woods to make these drums, such as oak, ash, redwood, cedar and cherry. Please feel free to inquire about them.

ASHB      9"x21" ashiko     This 'basic, no frills' drum is targeted to the beginner. Or someone with little cash to spend. The sound is of the same quality of the ASH9 model. What makes this drum inexpensive, is that it is not finish sanded and only has one coat of polyurethane on it.

ASH8    8"x19" ashiko   This little drum packs a lot of sound. The base is very throaty,  has firecracker slaps, and a nice range of tones. I often play this drum when I accompany an acoustic guitar. It's small size, makes it great for backpacking, or to just grab and take with you anywhere. ( airplane, bus, bike, walking, ect.)

ASH9   9"x21" ashiko    This drum has similar characteristics as the 8" ashiko, with a little deeper, less throatier Base. Easy to carry, and good for smaller drum circles.

ASH10   10"x23"  ashiko    This is my favorite 'all-around' drum. Not too big, not to small. Easy enough to carry around, but big enough head size to get more tones, and be played comfortably with both hands on the head. A good high-end, lead-style drum for medium to large 'in-control' drum circles. Sounds great when played with 8" ashiko. It has a nice medium out-spoken base with very loud slaps, and a good variety of tones.

ASH11   11"x27"  ashiko    I call this drum  'the cannon'. It has a deep, demanding strong base, that can be heard over larger drum circles. It's slaps     and open tones are very, very loud. A good medium lead-style drum, that has that 'classic ashiko' look about it. This drum is also relatively easy to carry around.

ASH12   12"x27"  ashiko    This drum has a deep resonating base, high tinny rim shots, and nice strong slaps. The 12" drum is alot of fun to play because of the amount of tones you can get out of it. You also can be heard at larger drum circles with this drum.  The size of this one makes it a little more cumbersome to carry, but is well worth the effort.

ASH13   13"x30"   ashiko    The 13" drum is laced down with a calf skin head.  The calf skin head and a larger opening at the bottom of this drum, gives it more of a conga sound. It has a short deep base, rich open tones, and nice slaps. I use this drum for acoustic jam sessions, controlled drum circles, and band performances. This is a very good, down to earth, enjoyable drum to play.

ASH15   15''x38''    mama ashiko    If you like big drums, this is the one for you. This drum is also laced down with a calf skin or cowhide head. She has an assortment of very earthy tones, great slaps with a awsome deep, deep base. When tuned just right, you can feel the open tones go right thru your body. This is a great drum for holding down the base at drum circles. The mama ashiko is a very enjoyable drum to play.
